Jonathan's Lady
“Stop!” Jor-El’s voice boomed. “My son, your actions can have grave consequences. Have I not shown you this?”

In that moment, another voice rang clearly in Clark’s ears, words from nearly three years ago, before Jor-El‘s death sentence, before his powers were stripped, before he had made the one single choice that had changed all their lives forever --”Your actions have consequences, Clark. Didn’t your mother and I ever teach you that? You didn’t think this thing through and now….”

He stood motionless for several seconds, unable to move forward, unwilling to move back.

“Do it,” Fine demanded.

He flexed his fingers anxiously around the crystal but stayed put.

“I’m going to do what I should have done when all of this started,” he whispered, then dropped the crystal to the ground. “A life for a life, right?” He turned and faced Fine. “Without me, you and Jor-El have nothing. No New Krypton. No threats on people’s lives. No negotiation. Everyone is safe.”

“What are you doing?”

“What my father would do, if he were in my place. The only person I should be willing to sacrifice…is myself.”

With that, Clark took another crystal from the panel and shoved it into an open slot. The fortress instantly glowed a bright, sickening green and Clark fell to his knees.

What a great twist. That's what the REAL Clark Kent would do, not G&M's passive and helpless version!

Jonathan's Lady
Semiconscious, he was aware of being jerked back to his feet.

“You little fool! Did you think this would stop me?! There are other worlds, more than you could ever dream. There will be a new Krypton. Zod will rule. I will find a way. But until that day comes, at least I have the satisfaction of witnessing the death of the great Jor-el’s only son, ” the man sneered, giving Clark’s shirt one last jerk before dropping him to the floor and watching him crumble.

“Ow.”

Martha Kent rushed from the other room back to her husband, nearly dropping the blankets she carried. “What? What is it?? What’s the matter? Are you okay?”

Jonathan waved a dismissive hand at the breathless string of questions. “I’m fine, Martha. I just got a little kink in my neck, that’s all.”

“Oh,” she sighed, relieved, and took a seat next to him on the couch. “Well, I can rub it for you, if you’d like.”

Jonathan took her hand in his and kissed her knuckles sweetly. “Sweetheart, I’m fine. In fact, I’m better than fine. I haven’t felt this good in years. I don‘t need to lie down. I don‘t need to take it easy. Really.”

Martha tried to smile but was unable to hide her worry. “I…I know that….I …just…I keep thinking this is all a dream and…”

Before Martha could finish her thought, Jonathan doubled over and grabbed the sides of his head in pain, appearing to be trying to shield himself from some awful noise. And with stomach-turning certainty, she knew.

“NO!!” she wailed at a disembodied entity she had never been given the chance to face. “Leave him alone!! You bastard!!! Leave him alone!!!”

I thought he was going to take her up on the neck massage offer, and things were going to get a little, um, steamy. (In a PG-13 way, of course!) Oh well. :P:

Jonathan's Lady
Martha got to her knees and clutched frantically at her husband’s shirt as he cried out against the violent attack on his senses. “Jonathan! Jonathan answer me! Please!”

Then, just as suddenly as he had fallen forward, Jonathan sat up and looked about, reorienting himself. “I’m fine.” He took a few shaky breaths and got to his feet. “It’s Clark. I have to go,” he said hurriedly and darted for the door without another thought.

“Wait!” Martha pleaded, taking hold of his arm as though it were her tie to life itself. “You’re not going anywhere without me.”

“Martha, I don’t have time to explain, and I don’t have time to argue,” Jonathan protested, trying in vain to separate himself from her.

“I guess we’re going together then.”

“Martha…”

“Jonathan Richard Kent, don’t you dare argue with me.”

The determination set firmly in her eyes told him that arguing would be a futile endeavor. His hands dropped at his sides in defeat. “Let’s go.”

In a matter of minutes at high speeds, they were at the caves and standing over the stone table. “What are we going to do? We don’t have the key?”

From what Jonathan had told her, he only knew that Clark was in trouble, as he had the night that Lionel Luthor came to the caves. It was the same overwhelming feeling of dread that Jor-El had sent nearly a year earlier.

Without answering her, Jonathan placed his palm in the center of the table. Both watched as a blinding light exploded from the octagonal impression under his hand.
