Jonathan's Lady
|
Next thing either knew, they were standing in the middle of what could only be described as a fortress of ice and snow, all of which was washed in an eerie green glow. Martha held on to Jonathan. “How did you do that?” Jonathan opened his mouth to say he hadn’t the slightest idea but was interrupted. “I’m rather enjoying this. The son of Jor-El brought to his knees by the weakness of the human compassion that saved his life.” Clark lay on the ground in twisted and terrible agony with Fine looming over him like a bloodthirsty vulture circling its prey. “Oh, the irony. They‘re a pathetic race and you‘ve inherited their greatest failing. Heart over logic. You’re an embarrassment to your people. I‘m going to enjoy watching your death.” Martha almost let out a horrified screech before Jonathan managed to close his hand quickly over her mouth. “He can’t know we’re here,” he whispered. “It’s the only way we can save Clark.” He tried to sound confident, but it was obvious from the tension in his words that he was just as afraid for their son. Slowly, he dropped his hand and took a step. But she didn’t let go. “Where are you going?” she asked anxiously, careful to keep her voice low. “I’ve gotta get down there,” he whispered back. “That man has the same powers as Clark but none of his weaknesses. How are you going to stop him by yourself?” Her grip on him tightened again. Jonathan looked at her, confidence brimming, and answered, “I’m not.” Xxxxxx “Hey!” Jonathan called out, and sprinted the remaining yards to his son’s side. He drooped to his knees and stoked the boy's hair reassuringly, as he had when Cark was a child after a nightmare. For several seconds, Fine was too surprised to react. “How did you get here, human?” he sputtered angrily. At his father’s touch, Clark struggled to open his eyes. “Dad? Dad, please, don‘t,” he whimpered, struggling to sit upright and offer some kind of protection, while even then his life faded. “No matter, you won’t be here for long,” Fine continued bitterly. In a blink, he was in front of Jonathan and lifting him off his feet. "This is better than I could have ever hoped. Either way, one of you gets to watch the other die." Jonathan looked down at him with a half smirk. "What are you grinning at, vermin?" “Well, you know they say about us Kents. You just can’t keep us down.” He looked beyond the man’s shoulder. “Isn’t that right, Clark?” Surprised, Fine tossed the taller man to the ground with a heavy thud. It was only then that he realized the green glow had vanished. Before he could react, Clark was holding him by the shoulders. “Down isn’t where you’re going ,“ he grumbled angrily, just before tossing the man with all his might up into orbit around the earth. |

Jonathan's Lady

“Jonathan , are you all right?” Clark turned around to see his mother walk out from behind the large, ice panel , one hand still holding a crystal, the other being held out to his father. Jonathan rubbed at the back of his head and took the hand she offered. “Never better,” he said, getting easily to his feet. “Mom. But how did you know which crystal would be the right one?” Jonathan‘s expression slid from amused, to perplexed, to cautious acceptance in the space of half a second. “A little Kryptonian birdie told me,” he admitted. “And I told your mother. It‘s a good thing she‘s so tiny. She‘s practically invisible,” he teased. “I just ran a little interference.” “Jor-El? He went to you for help? Why would he do that?” “You are my son,” the deep voice echoed. All three looked up. “No. I’m his son,” Clark said honestly, putting a hand on Jonathan’s shoulder and giving a slight squeeze. “And I always will be.” For a moment there was no response. “Jonathan Kent,” the voice called with great authority. The man blinked in surprise at the sound of his name and took a step forward. “Your noble sacrifices and devotion to Kal-El have not gone unnoticed by me. You are a man of good character and considerable conscience. That is why, once again, I leave him in your care. The crystals contain enough of my knowledge to educate him when he is ready. I know when that time comes, you will be there to guide him.” At once a bright light flashed through the fortress. And then there was silence. Xxxxxxx Martha and Jonathan sat snuggling on the couch, fingers intertwined and whispering things Clark dared not eavesdrop on with his acute super-hearing. But he didn’t blush and look away as he once would have, instead he paused and smiled appreciatively, then continued down the stairs. “Sorry to interrupt,” he offered, still smiling. It was now his parents’ turn to look embarrassed. Martha got up and made some excuse about having to make tea, and Clark took the opportunity to steal the spot next to his father. He studied the floor hard and shuffled his feet. “I know something is on your mind, Clark. Out with it.” Jonathan put an arm around his son’s shoulders and watched him closely. “Why do you think he did it, dad? Why would Jor-El destroy himself?” Jonathan gave the question some thought. “Well, from what you’ve told me, the real Jor-El wasn’t all that different from you, Clark. Maybe whatever it was that was in that place, in the end, finally reflected who he really was. He gave his life twice to save his son. He must have had some good in him.” Clark shrugged, not completely convinced. “Maybe.” Jonathan looked at Clark and saw an age in his eyes far beyond the young boy he once knew. “What I do know is that I’m very proud of you.” TBC... The next part will be the last... |

I thought you wanted him to be good :D Notice I'm not making him a saint or excusing anything he did. I'm just pointing out that whatever it was was some misguided force of what used to be Jor-El who finally showed a quality that we should have seen from the beginning. |

Jonathan's Lady
|
The house was quiet. Martha laid draped over her husband’s chest, her ear placed just over his heart. Jonathan took a deep breath and exhaled, still wondering over the days events. He had been dead. Not sick. Not sleeping. Not away on a trip. Dead. Oddly, it wasn’t all that different from last summer when he woke up to find that three months of his life had disappeared. But unlike last time, it was clear that life had gone on without him. His clothes were packed away, his personal effects packed up in the trunk in the attack. And the little things, like his razor being gone from the side of the bathroom sink, were a cold reminder of how close he had been to missing so many things. Missing it all. And now, not only was he back with his family, but he was whole and healthy, something he hadn’t been for quite some time. He had even surprised himself that afternoon with how quickly he had gotten to Clark without being the least bit winded. It was truly a second chance, and he thanked God for it. It truly was, as Martha said, a miracle. He might have thought on it more, but the sound of unexpected light snoring brought his head up in search of the noise. He strained his eyes, but was unable to find the guilty party. Slowly, he eased his way out of the bed, assuring his wife that he was only going to get some water, to which she sighed contentedly and settled into the bed again. Jonathan walked a few steps and was nearly past the doorway of his bedroom when snoring brought his attention to the floor. There was Clark, sitting up, huddled next to the door with a blanket wrapped loosely around him, just as he used to be when he was a little boy and too embarrassed to tell them he didn’t want to sleep alone. Jonathan squatted next to him and touched his shoulder. “Hey,” he said gently. Clark startled and squinted back at him. “Oh, I, um, I was just…uh” he stuttered, gathering the blanket and starting to stand. Jonathan placed a more firm hand on his shoulder. “It’s okay, Clark.” He smiled reassuringly. “Listen, I was having some trouble sleeping and was going to get an early start on some chores. Wanna give me a hand?” If Clark saw the through the thin excuse, he didn’t show any signs. “Sure,“ he said brightly and scrambled to his feet. Jonathan put an arm around the young man’s shoulders. “You better look out. I might just be done before you this time.” Clark laughed and put an arm around his father’s shoulders, too. “I bet you will, dad,” he said proudly. The man looked over his shoulder at his wife, who was now sitting up in their bed and watching the whole little scene, and mouthed, “See you later,” with a grin. The End |

Well, I do have to get back to WFWM but I wanted to bring Jonathan back and touch on Clark being willing to sacrifice himself and then the family being a bit clingy to Jonathan, too, which would only be natural.
:D There! Jonathan is alive!! And he's gonna stay that way! |
