Faint opera music plays in the background announcing Lionel’s arrival in a limo heading into Smallville. A creepy little face appears on Lionel’s TV screen and tells him he needs to play a little game to stay alive. The limo screeches to a halt across the tracks with a train coming…Lionel solves the hangman puzzle “no mercy” and gets out just in time… Clark and Chloe are in the Daily Planet discussing how frequently Lionel is at the house with Martha. Chloe tells Clark he has got to tell Martha that Lionel knows. Lionel stops by to visit Lex to determine if he’s behind the attempt on his life and realizes Lex doesn’t know anything. Martha is busy practicing a speech when Clark comes in and finally tells her about Lionel knowing his secret. She leaves for the fundraiser and tells Clark not to worry she can handle Lionel. Meanwhile back at LuthorCorp Lionel has his office swept for bugs. It’s clean. The creepy face guy pops up on the laptop screen and repeats the rude phrase Lionel just said to the guy who swept for bugs. The lights go out and Lionel gets jabbed in the neck with a syringe and dragged away. Lionel wakes up in a dark room with TV screens and creepy face guy is explaining the next game. He shows Lionel a video of Alex, the limo driver, burning to death as he tried to play the game and failed. Lionel succeeds in balancing the scales and triggering the door release a jumps through the door just in time to play a new game…with Martha as a captive. *stupid commercial break* :ahh: Martha is trapped in a glass tank filling with water. Lionel has to solve a word riddle in order to save her. Clark and Chloe are talking strategy about tracking Dr. Fine and monitoring Lionel’s activities when Lois calls to tell him that Martha never showed up at the fundraiser dinner. Clark and Chloe go to Lionel’s office and discover Lex is looking for Lionel too. They find a hi-tech camera gizmo hidden in a statue. Computer-whiz Chloe manages to trace the signal and get an address to find out where it was broadcast from. Jump back to Lionel and Martha…he scrambles to solve the puzzle before Martha drowns in the tank. He does and they escape into the next trap…a metal cage elevator rises to the top of the abandoned skyscraper. The creepy face guy has another TV screen so he can talk to Martha and Lionel. He opens a little metal box with a gun in it and tells Lionel he has to kill Martha or himself or they’ll both die. He’s rigged explosives to the elevator brakes so if one doesn’t shoot the other, they’ll both die. Meanwhile Clark and Lex go to the address Chloe found. They arrive only to find the words “game over” written on paper covering the TV monitor. They take it off and see Lionel telling Martha to shoot him. She can’t. He takes the gun, puts it to his chin, and pulls the trigger. It wasn’t loaded. Chloe is busy tracking a new signal and gives Clark directions to the elevator’s location. Clark superspeeds away when Lex is distracted for a moment. The creepy face guy unmasks himself and tells Lionel they’ll both die just so he can watch him suffer. The explosion sends the elevator screaming to the basement. Clark arrives to the chamber that was flooded and hears the elevator falling and catches it as he stares into Lionel Luthor’s eyes. Clark gently sets it down, frees them, and hugs Martha. Lionel says, “that was miraculous…thank you, son,” as he walks away rather stunned. Back at the farm Clark and Martha talk through how to deal with the Lionel situation. Lex finds Lionel back the elevator looking at the gun contemplating life. (He seemed awfully smug to me. I think he was behind the whole thing.) Lex tells Lionel that an old employee Lincoln Cole was the man who orchestrated the game. Lex questions Lionel about what he meant when he told Martha that Clark was a special boy—Lionel tells him the Clark is nothing more than a simple farm boy. “Let it go, Lex. Let it go.” Later that night Clark goes to see Lionel. Clark asks Lionel why he kept his secret. Lionel continues to spin lies, while appearing to be sincere. Our favorite BDA finally shows he does have some steel in his spine and tells him to stay away from Martha. ***** Spine tingling episode filled with action and great acting. Believable and entertaining. Interesting adaptation from a movie plot...good work writers! |

Spare a thought for someone who’s about 5 episodes behind you (as we are here in England). I’ve only just seen Cyborg. So you see “Recap” is my way of getting a preview of what’s up and coming. I love it when “Recaps” practically quote the scripts and give a detailed description of the scenes. Don’t get me wrong Snarky, I thought your Recap was great, but I do enjoy reading a lengthy synopsis. I wish I could join in the current topics, but alas, the Atlantic Time Delay avoids me from doing so. I do enjoy the postings though. Well done. Walton Calling |

I'll try to catch more dialog next week. This episode moved so fast I barely got the basics scrawled out as it was playing. Hopefully I'll be able to pause it as I watch next week so I can add more detail. ;) |
