The finale begins with a brief recap of memorable scenes and quotes from season 5.

“A dark force from Krypton has been awakened, Kal-El, and it’s sights are set on earth.” Jor-El to Clark

“I don’t love you.” Clark to Lana

“I didn’t take Lana from you. You lost her all by yourself.” Lex to Clark

“Lex doesn’t know what he’s gotten himself into.” Clark to Lana

“You expect me to believe anything that comes out of your mouth?” Lana to Clark

“One shot of this and theoretically you’d be protected from any disease that could be unleashed.” Lex to Lana

“The night Jonathan died I told him that I knew everything about Clark.” Lionel to Martha

“Fine was created by Kryptonians. He’s already been destroyed twice.” Clark to Lionel

“I didn’t find it. I wrote it.” Lionel to Clark

“All the strange things in Smallville. It’s all tied together.” Lex to Lana

“This warning is related to something more terrible than the virus.” Lionel to Chloe and Clark

“What does it say?” Chloe to Clark

“Zod is coming.” Clark to Chloe

Clark is feeding the horses in the barn when a dark shadow passes over the Kent Farm. The horses get restless and Shelby barks. Clark looks outside and sees the dun reflecting off the house windows. He closes the barn door and resumes his chores.

Lex and Lana are sleeping on the couch by the fire after an all-nighter with Chinese take-out. Lex wakes suddenly, acts like he’s got a tremendous headache, jumps into his porche and zooms away. Lana follows him. He jumps out of the car and runs into Mayor’s field still grabbing his head. Lana runs after him. He yells for her to stay back.

The ground explodes around Lex as the ship hovers above him. Dr. Fine appears beside Lana. A blue light shoots out of the ship and sucks Lex up. Lana asks Dr. Fine what’s happening and he replies, “I’m preparing him.” Fine disappears and Lana runs out to where Lex used to be standing.

 Sing along with the theme song *Somebody Save Me*

Back at the Kent Farm, Lois is trying to work out a flight that she and Martha had booked to go to Washington D.C. for an education conference. Lionel shows up presumably to talk with Clark since he thought Martha would be gone by now. He offers his jet when he learns they’re having difficulty getting a flight. Martha acts nervous around him and a little too “friendly” for a grieving widow in my opinion.

Lana goes straight to Chloe at the Daily Planet to tell her about Lex getting sucked into the spaceship and reveals that Dr. Fine is behind it. Once again the pink princess makes it all about her. :puke:

Chloe goes to the farm to tell Clark what happened. Clark finally decided he should go to the fortress to talk to Jor-El. Jor-El tells him about Zod and how he will inhabit a human body in order to escape from the phantom zone. Jor-El extracts a dagger from the crystals and tells Clark he must kill the human vessel no matter who it is.

Clark goes to Chloe and talks through what he learned from Jor-El before taking any action. Lana lurks in the hallway and overhears Clark say, “If I’m right, then I have to kill Lex.”

Back at the loft, Clark looks at the knife from Jor-El. Lionel arrives to speak with Clark.

Lionel: You know, Clark, in certain cultures when a father presents his son with a knife it represents a right-of-passage.

Clark: How do you know this is from Jor-El?

Lionel: The glyphs on the blade—they’re Kryptonian. What does Jor-El want you to do with the dagger? Long pause. Clark, I came here to find you.

Lionel pulls a piece of paper out and shows it to Clark. It’s another warning written by Lionel in the Kryptonian language. Lionel asks him what it says.

Clark replies, “Sacrifice the vessel.” Lionel doesn’t understand. Lionel wants to help and asks Clark to let him help him figure out a solution.

Clark finally replies to Lionel, “Jor-El wants me to kill. The person will be a vessel. Zod will possess a human form and destroy earth just like he did Krypton. But I can’t kill anyone, you of all people, know that.”

Lionel says, “The test of a hero is knowing when the greater good will be served by an evil act. To save the earth the cost of one life is a price that must be paid.”

To which Clark responds by saying, “Even if the life is your son? Lex is the vessel of Zod. He was abducted this morning in Mayor’s Field.”

Lionel is speechless for a moment as he absorbs the news.
Lionel goes to the field and finds a dazed Lex laying in the field. (Anyone else think this was reminiscent of the cornfield scene from season one? Very interesting.) Lionel starts to lecture Lex and reaches for his shoulder. Lex gets annoyed and shoves Lionel which sends him flying backward several hundred feet to smash into the windshield of his car. Lex looks down at his hands completely shocked, then discovers he has superspeed too as he zips to Lionel to survey the damage before superspeeding away.

Lex zips to the mansion and is greeted by Lana. He shoots his hand—no damage—and tells Lana he has superpowers now. She looks at him in horrified disbelief for a moment but then tells him that Clark is going to kill him. Lex tells her Clark can’t stand the fact that he is different now. Lex tells her if she wants to stay with him to be at the top of the LuthorCorp Tower later tonight before he superspeeds away.

Clark meets Lionel at the hospital. Lionel tells Clark that Lex now has the same powers as Clark. Lionel confesses to Clark that he raised Lex to be ruthless and survive at all costs. Lionel asks Clark who he’s willing to sacrifice—Lex or Lana?

Martha and Lois fly to Washington D.C. on Lionel’s jet. Lois lightly questions Martha about her intentions with Lionel and then backs off.

Clark barges into the mansion as he searches for Lex. He finds Lana there instead. She actually has the audacity to say ‘I don’t know you at all’ and then berates him for not trusting her. She storms away after her “secrets and lies” speech.

Dr. Fine appears and tells Clark he was supposed to be the vessel but there was too much Jor-El in him to overcome so he had to resort to using a human instead. Humanity will die and it’s Clark’s fault according to Fine. Clark tells him he’ll never to what he wants.

Dr. Fine replies “so it begins” as he places his hand on a computer releasing a virus into the system with catastrophic world consequences. We see a blackout hitting Metropolis.

Clark zips to find Chloe. There’s chaos everywhere as the entire city is without power. Worldwide computer systems are shutting down. A car crashes through the Daily Planet window where Clark and Chloe are standing. He catches it as he shields Chloe with his body. She tells him he must stop Zod as he expresses doubts about the best way to accomplish it. She realizes she may never see him again and runs to give him a kiss. A phone rings somewhere in the rubble. Clark answers it and Lex tells him it’s time to meet for a battle.

Lex challenges Clark to kill him and mocks him for being good and virtuous when he lies to everyone he claims to love. He refers to Lana as a prized possession. (I’m thinking, yeah, kinda like a bobble-head doll.)

Clark calmly listens to Lex’s accusations and the responds by telling Lex he’s not himself. They have a fight using superpowers and Clark holds the dagger to Lex’s throat.

Dr. Fine appears right on cue and tells Clark to kill him. (and I get a strange sense of déjà vu) Clark hesitates and then flings the dagger into Dr. Fine’s heart. It opens the portal for Zod who arrives and inhabits Lex. Zod and Clark talk briefly before Clark gets zapped into the phantom zone.

Martha and Lois pass out on the plane due to lack of oxygen. We realize that a Dr. Fine clone was flying the plane and now isn’t. It’s not looking too good for them.

We see flashes a street riots and pandemonium occurring all over the world. Chloe is outside running through the rioting people when she finds Lionel stuck in traffic. He lets her into the limo. They’re trapped and can’t get away. The people break in and drag them both out. They pound Lionel to a pulp as they hold Chloe down. Lana fights her way through the wild crowd so she can stand by Lex’s side at the top of the LuthorCorp Tower. She pledges her undying loyalty to him. They kiss as the camera pans away to show Clark trapped in the phantom zone.

*******************************************************************

Will there be sixth season? Honestly, I think I’d rather have them do a two hour special to resolve all the loose ends and give our superhero his brains, powers, and integrity back.

They need to wrap up what used to be an outstanding series that just turned ordinary when they decided to use shower scenes and sex instead of quality writing that built up the superhero rather than tarnish him.
