Word spread quickly that a small party of riders was appearing the Raven Gate from the East. As they neared the flag of House Arryn was seen, but so was the flag of House Tully. The riders numbered twenty with a mixture of arms and armor. At the head was a familiar face around the Vale, Ser Brandon Tully. Ser Brandon was uncle to Lady Lysa and recently had been named commander of one of the armies heading south into the Riverlands to support them in their war. Once at the gate Ser Brandon requested an meeting with Lord Karis and told the guards that time was of the essence.

"How does he know these things?" Karra quipped, her arms crossed beneath her breast in an attempt to control her attitude. "Go and meet the Blackfish, he says, an hour ago. Longeye hadn't even seen 'em yet, 'an Shadow just caught the scent." At the mention of her name the over-sized black wolf turned toward the small gaggle of lordlings and knights, all assembled to properly welcome a man of the Tully's stature to Ravenrock. There were three Direwolves present, each sniffing and nipping at one another as they played their wolf games; Nymeria, the smallest of the bunch, ran about her quiet sister while Leroush - colored a light grey - sat dutifully by his master as if he was aware of the occasion. The sight was so common that no one in the courtyard questioned the antics. One foreign to the animals might have been so inclined to be frightful. "Maybe he really can talk to that bloody bird." "Karra, please." The trimmed, proper Karil responded, his countenance alight with dismay at his sister's meanderings. He had long wished that his father did not insist the family tradition extend to his sister, the three month long foray with the Rangers had not only ruined Karra's chances of finding a suitable husband, but went so far as to turn her into one of the woodsmen. While the father thought nothing of it, Karil was the one left to deal with the consequences. "Do you really want Brandon Tully to believe our Lord Father is a Skinchanger? Or worse yet, us wargs? I'm sure the Septons would have a thrill of decrying us wildlings wearing the skins of Lords." Although his tone was meant to be serious Karra only stuck her tongue out in protest and leaned aside, sharing a secretive whisper with Dastana, the foreign blade from Braavos. Between the wolves and the company Karil was almost embarrassed to host a Tully; how he would kill to have a host of Knights, real Knights, to awe one of the most important defenders of the Vale. Although they were few the grouping was not one to disregard. Celesti Nivela, the aptly titled 'Maiden of the Vale', stood patiently beside Karil, flanked in turn by Ser Sarasin Khan, a much valued ally pledged from the shores of Dorne, but the figure that drew real attention was The Black Priest, Bael, a man dangerous as any Karil had ever encountered. He stood at a height most associated with giants, clad in head to toe in a thick, battered plate drawn in black with a dark, red flame blazoned on the chest. The Pirest had his hammer, a massive weapon that remained unwieldy for any normal man, that set on one shoulder, silent, waiting as the others for their shared task. It was a display of character. Karis was not a complete buffoon when it came to politics, Karil mused, the man had put these individuals on display, perhaps to remind the Blackfish that the Blackthorne house had a sort of real power about it. Although for what reason he could not be sure. When the honored guest arrived Karil wasted little time. "I bid you welcome, Ser." Karil offered the Tully a proper greeting, his head and torso bowing in respect. Most of the others followed suit, albeit Karra, Dastana, and Bael were not so apt to heed ceremony. "Please, my Lord Father awaits you in his solar; he believed that it be best you two speak in private, and without interruption." With a snap, Karil summoned the master of the Horse, a thin, wisp of a man, and the riders were seen to in a cordial manner. Leroush moved with Karil as he went to escort Brandon and his retainers, at least those whom were to follow. The Knights in attendance all filtered off, seeing to their duties among the castle and entertaining their new guests. All except for Karra. Curious as she was, the girl kept along as a tail, moving with her wolf and listening to the idle chatter of her brother's politicking. The dark, stone halls of Ravenrock seemed to go on forever. The entrance to the keep proper was more a cave than a door, carved into the tone and set for efficiency over any sort of aesthetics. Very little expense was made to decorate the innards of the castle. All around flickering torches cast queer shadows and footfalls echoed farther than they should have, making any trek inside an eerie venture. There were more than a few tails of how every room kept its own ghosts. Twisting and turning, eventually the party found their way to the northern tower, the personal housing of the family themselves, with Karis' Solar at the very top. A trek up winding stairs brought them to a half-opened door. Behind the portal sat a plain room, one stacked with maps and instruments devoted to the business of a lord. Karis himself sat at the end of a long, narrow table, his back arched as he poured over a large map that spilled over the edges of his stand. At the man's feet sat a white direwolf, curled about his chair; the creature's eyes flicked to the new arrivals but he made no move to welcome them. "Corn! Corn! Corn!" A raven called from across the room. The white, proud creature was perched on an opened window, its wings fluttering on occasion to draw attention. The Lord of Ravenrock ignored the bird. Instead he waved his visitors in, his eyes never once leaving the map below. Although in no real danger, Karis wore a sword at his hip, the raven-shaped hilt visible at it jutted into the man's side. His clothing was simple, plain, no more than a riders tunic and leather breeches, boots, and a thick coat that clasped his form in some degree of warmth. "They say Ravens bring dark words on dark wings," Karis spoke, his soft bass coursing across the stone walls with a subtle power. "Is it the same with Trout, I wonder." "Not as dark as it could be" Brandon Tully said glancing about the room and then at the men before him. "I do hope you are looking over the situation that has come to both our countries." Brandon shifted his weight and moved a bit further into the room. "As you know Lord Karis the Lannisters and the King have finally begun their invasions of the Riverlands. They are trying for a three thrust approach, hoping to stretch out our forces and overwhelm us." Brandon pulled out a map from a map case on his back and respectively approached. "If you don't mind." He opened the map and placed it on the table. On it were three arrows. One was aimed at the town of Maidenpool, which the King's forces had been sieging for close to two months. Another showed a thrust up the King's Road and had marking of Houses loyal to both the King and the Lannisters. The last area came from the Gold Road coming from the Golden Tooth and heading towards Riverland. "As you can see we have three thrusts heading into the Riverlands. It is vital that forces from the Vale move south to assist our brothers in arms and thus why I am here. Lord John wishes for you to join in this fight as soon as possible but is willing to let you decide were your soldier would best be used." |
