Hello fellow community members, My name is PvtCryan and I need your help if you're willing. In my debate class at school, 2 of my friends got put in a bad position. They have to debate for the point that same-sex marriage should not be legal. The reason why it's bad is that both of them are for gay rights, and the argument is entirely on Pathos (which is not very good in a competitive debate). Now what I ask of you, is to help me. You may debate on this subject, but any point of view or evidence supporting their position although it's disagreeable(indeed to me at least) would be welcomed. I come here because of this community's creativity and intelligence, and I hope you can help me so I can help my friends. I'm not asking for a winning arguement but I'm asking for information to make their argument at least able to put up a good show. Thank you for reading this, Cryan |

Well when I was taking my debate class the teacher said had us research both sides so that we understand both sides before going into the debate. So what i suggest for the 2 friends is for them to do research for both sides of the debate for and against same-sex marriage. Reasoning for this is that if you only know about your side (be it for or against) then you wont exactly get far in the debate but if you know both sides of the debate you can better understand how the other side will respond and also if they research both sides they can find flaws in the others arguments and be able to tell if they are just making up facts and statistics. I hope this helps. |

Eh, same-sex marriage shouldn't be banned. That's why we're in America. But, there are still points. One major point is of course, the "Gay" state of mind. It's very known that if you surround yourself with gay people and gay people only, you may give in. This is seen from Bachelor Societies such as the Chinese Bachelor Society when the Chinese first immigrated. They had no females, and unless you gave into intense prostitution, you probably just went gay to satisfy your animal desires. A current example is prisons. Many males go gay in prisons. Now, how do these relate to gay marriage? Well, once gay marriage is legalied, if you have two gay fathers, you are highly susceptible to their influence. Especially if it becomes a "norm" to become gay. There would be a definite spike in those who are gay, which would then result in less babies being born. A great response from the opposition would be "We are nearing over-population. Maybe it's better that less babies are born, thus, gay-marriage may be a "necessity", aside from emotional reasons. Your response would then be, "and what happens when we reach that point where not only is our population 30% homosexual but where our population has become stable. Shoudl we then ban same-sex marriage again?" Your reason simply branches even more problems [they may mirror that statement back to you, which is why you have to close them on it, while giving them a chance, always interrupting while changing the subject. Control and lead their minds to what you want! [Why politicians rarely get shit done, they're simply good at talking and influencing]. But of course, this is America. We don't allow ourselves to be ruled by Fear when one's freedom is in question [unless you're the government]. While not as big, they can bring up that it will simply cause controversy [although there would be controversy the other way around as well, you simply sell the topic that legal gay-marriage will be the predominate controversy topic.]. I really can't think of any other reasons. It's hard to debate a subject that is simply wrong. As well, you can definitely go "While we allow all religions in this country, this country was founded on that of Christianity. And what does the bible say?" <- This will get people PISSED but hey, it's a debate. Remember to open with, "We support same-sex marriage, we are simply announcing the reasons of why one would be against same-sex marriage." Now, while you can't allow yourself to be ruled by fear, [do not bring this up in your debate, it will make your side harder to bring across] you may go. We understand that these gays are humans and have feelings. However, we are making the decision, emotions aside, for the greater good of our people. [Haha make sure to make it seem as if gay-marriage will fuck up the country]. This will give sympathy to your side, equivalent to nuking Japan and their women and children for the greater good of our country. Equivalent to putting Japanese in camps to eliminate that one single spy. Life is sad, but sometimes we need to put this pain on ourselves for the betterment of us as a whole. As well, when you branch off into other subjects, always lead it back to gay-marriage needing to be illegalized. Whether you are off-topic or not, you simply make them think that you're not And hell, if your teacher isn't an idiot and catches on to what you're doing, the teacher may give a higher grade since they can see your intelligence at controlling others thoughts ![]() Debate trick : if one of your listeners catches on to you influencing others while secretly not giving them a chance to complet etheir statement since you are always interupting, although you must interrupt smart, so they don't catch on. But those who do, when they stand up in rage and call you out, respond with "Let's just stick to the subject at hand and not get off-topic." Then continue on to what you're saying. The person will boil in rage, and won't be able to communicate. They may be asked if they want to leave the room, and if they're weak-minded, they may storm out rather than debating, the only thing that will bring results. As well, when debating, you must enter the state of mind that gay marriage should not be legalized. While you open with the statement "I support gay marriage, I am simply bringing up other points", the moment after that, take a breath, and become the anti-gay person. Those involved in the discussion will look at you with awe. They'll recommend you becoming a politician or an actor. Controlling moods doesn't work sometimes in a lawyer surrounding, since the judges are smarter than you and not only will they know what youre doing but they have the ultimate say. But! You can always control the jury ![]() Freshmen AND Sophmore year of High school (senior now in college), I gave speeches on legalizing gay marriage. Freshmen year I winged it on the go but Sophmore I planned it out, powerpoint, all that good stuff. Anyways, Freshmen year, I stood up there, opened up with "I'm not gay in any shape or form , I simply understand what it's like to be a good person". I then went on, etc, gave reasons, outcomes, invalid points of opposition (all this was off the top of my head), and simply ended the last 3 minutes speaking about how we're America, not North Korea. How we stand for something. How disbanning gay marriage was simply wrong. Great closing statement at the time. [My teacher loved me, gave me my A, and when I had her again Senior Year, her final words to me were how I speak up for what I believe in.]Now when I look back, I see that I was naive. Sometimes we do need to put a burden on ourselves for the betterment of our people. Not related to gay-marriage, but at the time I had the mindset where no matter what, you must always do what's right. But that's wrong. Sometimes you need to make the bad decision for the betterment of the people. Imagine how many lives Batman could have saved had he simply killed the Joker. Imagine what would have happened had we not nuked Japan. America and the rest of the world may be under Imperial / Nazi control. Those decisions that seem wrong were simply needed. You think the guy with the nuke wanted to drop it? Well maybe, or maybe he was the guy who understood that he would take on the burden of that for his entire life for the better of the country. Off-topic, but hey, if someone brings up how we need to be "good", simply say that's a naive mindset and let your mind do it's thing
