Well characters have fought numerous times over the years, with differing results each time. I don't think the result of one exchange can really decide it outright.

The only problem with a few of those crossover battles is that a few of them were decided solely by fan votes, and those were the following:

Batman vs. Captain America
Superman vs. Hulk
Spider-man vs. Superboy
Wolverine vs. Lobo
Storm vs. Wonder Woman

So these 5 battles should probably be taken with a
Now looking at the proposed battle, I would have to go with Thor and this is why.

Thor is a god. Literally a god. Captain Marvel (I hate the name Shazam) is referred to as the World's Mightiest Mortal, a mortal being that has the power of the gods bestowed upon him, a huuuuge difference. I'd like to go through all of Captain Marvel's powers and compare him to Thor.

S for the Wisdom of Solomon As Shazam/Captain Marvel, Billy has instant access to a vast amount of scholarly knowledge, including most known languages and sciences. He has exceptional photographic recall and mental acuity, allowing him to read and decipher hieroglyphs, recall everything he has ever learned, and solve long mathematical equations. He also has a great understanding of divine phenomena in the mortal world. The wisdom of Solomon provides him with counsel and advice in times of need. In early Captain Marvel stories, Solomon's power also gave Marvel the ability to hypnotize people.

While it's great that Captain Marvel gains intelligence thanks to the Wisdom of Solomon, it does little in battle to help fight against an opponent with vastly superior experience on the battle field plus Thor isn't exactly dumb either, constantly having to out think his brother Loki, the trickster God. I think this all puts Thor in the lead I believe for a battle.

H for the Strength of Hercules Hercules' power grants Shazam/Captain Marvel immense superhuman strength, making him one of DC Comics' strongest characters. He is able to easily bend steel, punch through walls, and lift massive objects (including whole continents, such as South America). In the comics, this strength has evolved to be roughly equal to that of Superman.

A for the Stamina of Atlas Using Atlas' stamina, Shazam/Captain Marvel can withstand and survive most types of extreme physical assaults, and heal from them. Additionally, he does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe, and can survive unaided in space when in Captain Marvel form. In some stories, the stamina of Atlas makes Captain Marvel nearly invulnerable.

I don't think I have to go into strength and stamina too much here, Thor is physically the strongest of the Asgardians and is even capable of entering a state known as the "Warrior's Madness" which will temporarily increase his strength and stamina tenfold, along with the enchanted Belt of Strength which double's his strength and endurance. His stamina has allowed him to battle the entire Frost Giant army for nine months without any sustenance or rest, so I don't think Captain Marvel will be wearing him down anytime soon. Thor also has a very high resistance to physical pain, approaching near invulnerability.

Z for the Power of Zeus Zeus' power, besides fueling the magic thunderbolt that transforms Shazam/Captain Marvel, also enhances Marvel's other physical and mental abilities, and grants him resistance against all magic spells and attacks. The hero can use the lightning bolt as a weapon by dodging it and allowing it to strike an opponent or other target. The magic lightning has several uses, such as creating apparatus, restoring damage done to the hero, and providing fuel for magic spells. The current-continuity version of Shazam is able to personally generate and control lightning for various uses.

I don't think I have to go too much into how Thor can withstand the magic from Captain Marvel, he even has some resistance to magic and is quite used to dealing with him from his time on the Avengers with friends like Doctor Strange, fighting against mystical enemies and of course having to deal with his brother Loki. Thor also has the mystical hammer Mjolnir which helps give him extra powers and allows him to control natural thunder and storms. Also, Thor is the god of thunder, he's gonna be able to withstand even Captain Marvel's magical thunderbolts for a while.

A for the Courage of Achilles This aspect gives Shazam/Captain Marvel the courage and bravery of Achilles and, in one story, it is claimed to give him fighting skills.[52] In the Trials of Shazam! mini-series, this was changed temporarily to Achilles' near invulnerability. It also aids the hero's mental fortitude against most mental attacks.

Thor took on an entire damn army of Frost Giants, his courage and bravery isn't being questioned right now. And when it comes to fighting skills, Thor is a superb hand-to-hand combatant, and is skilled in armed combat, excelling in the use of the war hammer, sword, axe and mace. Plus he has been fighting for many millenia, he has had lots of times to learn how to fight and counter people, especially brawlers like Captain Marvel.

M for the Speed of Mercury By channeling Mercury's speed, Shazam/Captain Marvel can move at superhuman speeds and fly, although in older comics he could only leap great distances and even out run Superman. This also gives Marvel the ability to fly to the Rock of Eternity by traveling faster than the speed of light.

And finally the speed, now not only can Thor travel faster than light with the aid of Mjolnir, Thor possesses such keen senses that he can track objects traveling faster than the speed of light. So he's going to be staying at Captain Marvel's speed and be more than able to keep up with him.

So after looking at both of them, I have to say beyond a shadow of a doubt that Thor is the victor of this one and the World's Mightiest Mortal will fall before the hands of the God of Thunder.

Oops, I didn't finish my sentence about those matches it seems. Just that they should be taken with a grain of salt. I mean yeah I agree with most of them (Though Wolverine vs. Lobo...) but just wanted to make sure it was known that those 5 were decided just cause of votes of fans / readers.

I'm not a massive fan of the crossovers or the amalgam comics that came after but I thought the Shazam v Thor battle could be cool as they have both had recent updates to thier characters.
I love Thor but have always thought that Shazam was a underated character it's been great seeing him standing in for Superman in Future End.
I called him Shazam for two reason one to avoid confusion with Marvels Captain Marvel and two since the new 52 he has now been officially rebranded as Shazam by DC.

As I'm a bigger fan of DC I would say Shazam but... Thor is pretty badass so I think it would definitely be a close fight.

I'd compare shazam to mortal kombat's Raiden due to them having almost exact powers and being the closest things to thor outside the marvel universe, also as a side note you must remember thor's hammer was made from a dying star. I believe the weight was something like 1,000,000 tons for his hammer. Also thor has held back many times where as shazam has gone out with power more frequently.
