I say, you should really consider watching it if you're a shounen fan. The characters are amazing. The plot is solid, the save-the-world kind of plot, but has some really unique twists into it. The characters for instance, have probably one of the best I have seen in years. You have a goody-tooshoes kid who's also this happy-go-lucky kind of guy, even though he's gone through a lot of hardships. You have a girl who's supossed to take care for her tribe, since her mother died, but posses the art of "waterbending" (based on tai-chi), and wants to expand that ability, though she can't give up her clan. You have a guy without any form of bending (air, water, fire, earth). Think of Yamcha, only if he was charming, useful, and had some development in his character. The anti-hero starts out as a winy brat, but you find out more about his past later on. And then there's... well the most badass female character in any cartoon out there. So yeah, at least watch the first 2 episodes. Season 1 is the most lighthearted, season 2 is light-hearted, but has some incredibly dark turns (death is involved, yes, in a Nick Cartoon), and season 3 is REALLY dark. It doesn't lose it's humor though, which I like. Here's a video for example, not any massive spoilers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYmXFRnFat4&feature=related Edited by Huzzahfortimelines, Feb 3 2012, 04:02 AM.

I know what you mean but mecha animes are shonen. Shonen is a target demographic(in this case masculine public, aged between 10-20) and not a genre like action, romance... I know that a lot of us saw the Dragon Ball series when we were children and a lot of adults still watch shonen but that's how it is. Kara no Kyoukai and Monster that Huzza has suggested are seinen by the way. Since you were talking about high school and bullying, I would have suggested the manga onani master kurosawa which is a masterpiece but that's definitely not a shonen. You should try Fate/stay nigh also. The anime itself is not exceptional but unless you're willing to play the visual novel, which is really long(+70 hours), it's the easiest way to be introduced to the Type-Moon universe. The type-moon universe has several franchises based on the same universe and they all take place in a modern world with magicians and supernatural events. The type-moon universe has complex rules, lovable(and non-lovable) characters, epic fights and good stories. Kara no Kyoukai who has already been suggested is one of these franchises but it can be a bit difficult to understand for the novices and it's more mature/contemplative. Fate/stay night is quite short(24 episodes), has shonen elements(Justice, fantasy, fights with explosions...) and while its plot is a bit weak, the backstory is what matters. |

@Dende: [meme incoming] Still waiting for the Tsukihime Anime. [/meme over] At least Mahoutsukai won't need one, with all those fancy animations. If the trial is any indication of how the full novel will be... wow. Since When They Cry came up... I would recommend the visual novels, the fun part is figuring out what is going on (both Higurashi and Umineko), having all those crazy theories that multiply depending on how much time you spend reading (therefore = the VNs are LONG ... a lot of time to come up with solutions) while the "scary" moments can fail quite tremendously (they got DEENed, especially Umineko - just horrible what they delivered there) and DEEN prefers fanservice to offering important information, especially in umineko. "Exposition? Atmoshpere? Story? Nah, we just need boobs!" Or violence/gore. Monster = Shounen-Ai ... ? What? Sure, the 'villain' looks like he jumped straight out of a Shoujo but I can't recall any love between men. Wasn't it 74 episodes btw? Or does that count the recaps? Aside that: Shounen-Ai is generally wrong as a term as it describes something completely different in japanese (same for Shoujo-Ai; if you want to talk about those things just say yaoi or yuri). I won't delve into the specifics though, got to watch out for the youngens here. Recommendation: if you like history: Legend of Galactic Heroes - 110 episodes (first twenty are exposition = slow start) - from the 80's/early 90's - Witness the rise and fall of fictional historical figures, democracy vs. monarchy (what do you prefer? a corrupt democracy or a benevolent monarch?) - space opera, tactics reminiscent of battles in our history - gratitious german (and quite wrong too) - no, not Shounen (but really... is the genre/target group really that important? just delve into the unknown, why limit yourself?) |

[meme continuation]Of... of course we're still waiting for the Tsukihime Anime! It's not like there is already one or anything... baka... [/meme continuation] It's funny, I really wanted to change my avatar too! I can't wait... to die before any translation comes out, so cruel. T_T Well obviously Legend of Galactic Heroes is one of my favorite anime so I can't really say that he(and everyone else) shouldn't watch it... |

Don't know how to feel about making you tsundere for me. Denial is a beautiful thing.Still, guess I wronged Nasu but after he milked the Fate franchise for so long I really didn't expect him to put something out at all when Mahoutsukai turned into Duke Nukem Forever (... how long were they at 80%? Two or three years?). On kinda related news: Ryukishi from 07th expansion, When they Cry series, more or less announced (= he told the members of the english localization team) that he'll release something other than Higanbana this summer. Might be a new 'when they cry' for all we know. Will DEEN get their greedy, stinky, disgusting little hands on this again? Or will Ryukishi trainwreck this by himself? He got dangerously close to that in Umineko already. And can he make his next work even more post-modern than Umineko EP5-8? How many personified metaphors and concepts and goats (no details, spoiler and all) can he include this time? Which genre of literature is he going to desecrate? To be continued It's not a problem, you can be the fat blue bird if you want. Should I be worried about your health then or are you referring to the death of the internet? Or 2012? Well some of those might be the same after all. Mature Version of Shounen = Seinen (as Dende said) Mature Version of Shoujo = Josei Honestly there is not much point in saying that something is Seinen or Josei. Both Shounen and Shoujo have pretty basic and common layouts for characters, story progression, topics (sure, there are exceptions, no question), but as soon as you go out of "pure Shounen/Shoujo", saying that something is a Seinen or Josei just doesn't carry any information at all, "something is something". Just call Monster an action thriller or something like that, the target group doesn't really matter. Shounen-Ai/Shoujo-Ai and Yaoi/Yuri are something completely different and the former are pretty badly chosen terms. Edited by qno2, Feb 3 2012, 02:44 PM.

I might actually give this a go... honestly, I was about to bring this up... I've been re-watching Babylon 5 lately (not anime I know, but stick with me) And it occurred to me that there are very few shows with epic wars. Being a military history nut, I love studying wars and how they play out. I love seeing how this general out witted this general and this battle pushed them back this far etc etc. Most shows do not show this. they deal with the individual stories and do not show the progression of the war as a whole. Babylon 5, for example, is a fantastic story, but you don't really get to see how the war played out. I am curious if there are any anime that do show this. Basically, I am looking for a show (anime or otherwise) that plays out like a shogun Total war game ![]() Any suggestions?? |

The aforementioned Legends of Galactic Heroes, definitely. There are even two episodes that are just one of the characters watching a history lesson with "professors" talking about how we got to this point. Story ends of a similiar note too - "this chapter of history is over", not everything found it's conclusion, it all moves on. Aside that: yes you see the conflict from both sides and how they try to outsmart each other. Starts out a tad slow but as soon as shit hits the fan ... it does. Hrm, let me visit my list for what I've seen. - Code Geass was already mentioned and it ... kinda... maybe, possibly fits the criteria. Not exactly but. Kinda. - Utawarerumono ... with catgirls (not kidding) ... as far as I remember (saw this ages ago) there's not a whole lot of tactic going on but there's definitely the aspect of "leading a country against others" - Juuni Kokuki (12 Kingdoms); again, saw this ages ago, don't know how much tactic is involved and it defintiely takes some time until it hits the "big scale"; it's also unfinished, ends at 45 episodes right in the middle of the story - just found an anime called "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" but never saw this.. but hey, maybe, right? Quite old though, probably hard to find (probably better than the rendition of the Three Kingdoms in which everybody is a woman; yes, that exists) Went through the 300+ series I've seen: not a whole lot that'd fit, kind of sad actually. Maybe Gundam? Never watched those. I'd like to recommend another jewel I just remembered: Mugen no Ryvius (Infinite Ryvius), imagine "Lord of the Flies"... in space! Good times. Utawarerumono does have a lot of military stuff. It's probably the best anime based on an eichi (I'm sure I butchered that word) game I've seen. Actually the game part of said game is surprisingly good. PS: They're dog girls, not catgirls. Also, despite what the anime says the twins are boys. |

Ecchi. My bad, dog girls. Entirely different fetish . You'd be surprised to see which anime are based on those games, actually. Then again one would need to differentiate between a normal Visual Novel (+18 stuff can be part of it but isn't the focus) and an eroge/"ecchi game" (+18 stuff is the 'main objective').P.S.: You guys make me feel like a nerd, jeez. |
