It's canon this group existed long before they took on the name Templars, It's canon that Brutus, you know the killer of Ceasar, was an Assassin manipulated by Templars unknowingly. It's canon they work all over the world.

Edit:Before I forget. What Aliens? The Ones Who Came Before are from Earth, it's implied, atleast from my point of view, THEY evolved on earth and later geneticly engineered Humans.
That's fair enough. Guess I wasn't paying attention, although that is pulling some real crap out of their butt.

What? I thought that the reason that they were extinct was because their world was destroyed by that event that happened with the sun that is going to happen again, which is why Desmond is trying to prevent it?
No, their civilisation was mostly destroyed by this event, which is what caused them to create humans in the first place. Earth survived, the reigning intelligent species barly did, they then went extinct via currently unknown means. I think, but I'm not completely sure,it had something to do with humans rebeling against their masters.
Also as I stated, I honestly don't care if they pull reasons to get us into interesting Assassins of the Past out of their butts so long as the game is fun and the Past story is entertaining.

Wait, didnt they both inhabit the Earth, started a war between each other, and then got fried by a solar flare?

Maybe, it's explained mostly in 2 and Brotherhood which I haven't played in a little while, been playing Revelations and other games too much.

get's treated like it has done shit all well unless it has like most nations in Africa well the nation of South Africa gets my respect for giving up their nukes
*Cough* Egypt *cough*

But yeah, my understanding is the same as Riku's, the world was devastated by some disaster or another and the humans survived after their little rebellion. I wasn't aware they were genetically engineered though.

Also about potential future locations: in the first game when Desmond gets eagle vision in the "real world", there are hints at: "Yona Goni" with an outline of Mt. Fuji (Japan), there are 3 Pyramids (Egypt) and a hint at Machu Picchu according to the AC Wiki

It's heavily implied but not outright said they where geneticly engineered. It's becouse in one of the things Subject 16 leaves behind, in 2 I think, has a note from someone who realised that there are 'useless' parts of the brain that seem to focus on one specific use that they never actuilly use, and then the puzzle shows they only react to pieces of Edan. We where made to be effected by them.

Basicly. It's also implied Adam and Eve where the ones who started the rebellion by takeing an Apple. Also one of them is implied to either be or be decended from a mix of Human and Ones Who Came Before, a half breed. It's why Desmond's family has odd abilities, can use Apples easier than anyone else, and aren't really effected by Apples most of the time. The biggest hint at this is another one of the puzzles, finding 5 pictures of Gods.....mateing with humans, then 16's voice popping up calling Assassins the 'bridge between worlds'. Also if you take another one of his pop-ups litteraly the first Templar was Cain, as in killer of Abel and son of Adam and Eve, and the Templar 'symbol' was his mark. Luckily the Templars aren't a family organisation, for the most part, unlike the Assassins. Though this does leave in the option of running into a Templar who has similer inate abilities as yourself.
