Littlelamp light.
But that is one example out of a whole game. And while I WILL admit that Little Lamplight IS a stretch of the imagination it isn't COMPLETELY far fetched that there could be a small "town" of children in an apocalyptic future. There are constantly cases of feral children surviving for years on their own in modern times so to think that a Little Lamplight COULDN'T exsist is, in my opinion, stretching the imagination about as far as the ACTUAL Lamplight stretches it.
I no problem with them surviving.
Spoiler: click to toggle

Also you only asked for one. I could name 4 other main areas that bug me off the top of my head.

Uh. The downtown area isn't really optional, if you are following the main quest, and you fail your speech check against Three Dog.

My bad I really meant to list ANY areas that bug you.

As for its founding we don't know WHEN the whole relationship between Big Town and Lamplight came to be. It's most likely an evolutionary thing. With each new generation the grownups have a more child like mentality and so it lead to children being raised in Lamplight and then migrating at a certain age to bolster Big Town when they are strong enough to do so. Unfortunately if you have a child like mind you are NOT ready for the Capitol Wasteland.

I know what you mean.

I DO agree though that the downtown area should have been more open. The idea of an open world game FORCING you to use an area just never made sense. I always wished I could just climb over those rubble piles or at the least go through a building

But the game never forced you to go into the Downtown DC Ruins nor is it necessary to beat the game.

Of course not. It's not necessary to go into ALOT of the areas in Fallout 3 if you're focused on just the story. Hell if you wanna be a story purist you pretty much stay within the little sphere of the Megaton/Rivet City/Citadel area. Only time you HAVE to use the underground is when you visit Three Dog if I remember correctly. But what I'm saying is that this is an open world game with many things to see and do and it limits you with the rubble piles. And that is somethign that irks me. No OPEN world game should ever limit your mobility with-in the game world. End of the world borders are fine cause it can't be Minecraft and go on forever. But the fact that you MUST take a certain route to get certain places in that world is bothersome if not slightly annoying. Allow me to see the Underground on my own terms not because you are limiting me.

Just because it's optional (If you're not doing the Main Quest), doesn't mean it's any less of a point.
Technically, I could just live my life in Riverwood, chopping wood, playing hide-and-seek with that one kid, for 30 hours, and then leave the game statisfied. However, if someone would then come up to me and say: "You know, the guild-quests are kind of short, I wish they were longer, like Oblivion.", then making the point: "It doesn't matter, because it's entirely optional. I just hung around in Riverwood for 30 hours, and it didn't bother me". While I would not be bothered by the short guild-quests, it wouldn't mean that it's not any less of a shortcoming to the main game, for the person who did play the guild-quests.

I will agree that having it optional doesn't make the area less maze-like. I would like to point out ... oh! OH! You meant the having the underground sections be optional to move around in the DC Ruins in your last post! Well -- I just be calling myself stupid in that corner over there.

Nah, don't worry. You can't absorb all the text of a debate. :P

Just to put it simply, I would have preferred it if the Underground was just a faster way to navigate through D.C, instead of being the only way (Without fast-travel at least). This would have made the city feel more organic, with two methods of travel through the city. One where you use things like the high-ground of buildings, or clear through rubble, and the other one with a faster, but also more dangerous way of travel through the underground.
