So I bought a PS2 recently (second hand from Amazon, if anyone's curious) and among the games I've been wanting to try but until now missed out on are the Metal Gear Solid series. However I've got a fairly simple question, in that where exactly should I start? Do I really need to start with the very first game or can I jump in on a later one? And what's with there being apparently two different versions of the same game? (Sons of Liberty and Substance, for instance) Anyway I reckoned there are probably a few fans of the series here, including Squee, obviously, that might be able to point me in the right direction? |

I don't know much about the different versions but I DO know that they just add a little something to the original game so getting the original version won't have you missing out on anything important. Also I'd say start from MGS1 and working your way to 3. Me personally I like going from poor graphics to better graphics. Although if you wanna do it chronologically then it'd go 3,1 then 2.

Yeah sons of liberty is the base game while substance adds in some small things like this thing where you can change who plays who in certains scenes and i think it also has a skateboarding stage. But Subsistance which is for MGS 3 adds the third person camer (though you can switch in between it and the regular overhead by clicking the control stick) Note i know this stuff from the hd collection which has SOME of these things. |

(Note the scene thing is not from actually playing the game its just like a video viewer thing) Edited by halospaz117, Feb 27 2013, 04:42 PM.

Went with 1, Substance and Snake Eater in the end. I did want to grab Subsistence but it's nigh impossible to find for a reasonable price. Probably going to play them through in that order too, just so the graphical changes aren't as jarring, like ViperKrang said. Kind of excited really. All my friends used to bang on about these games back in the day but I was too stuck in my ways as a western PC gamer to bother trying anything that came out of Japan. Now I get to find out what I was missing. |
