I have recently gotten into the idea of role playing in games after watching squee's videos. The problem I am having is I can never seem to create a character that stays interesting. Can anybody give me any tips on how to role play and create a character effectively |

Just...explore yourself, really. I don't know if you like to read fiction, but this can also be a great source. Do you want to be a vengeful warrior of Skyrim, who's family was murdered by (Enter NPC here), and you set off on your quest to avenge them? Or can you see yourself as a sorrowful and grief torn wanderer, who's ability as a mage/fighter/ect. is exceeded only by your inability to act, due to the terrible consequences of your actions in your own past? Perhaps you prefer the greedy thief, who hides his longing for a friend behind stacks of gold and jewels. Being a writer of fiction, character ideas sort of come to me. Here's a great idea, that's so much fun, and that I think is the best way to play open world RPGs: Learn the game well. It has to be very open world and non-linear. The best games for this would be the 3 latest Elder Scrolls titles, the 2 latest Fallout titles, Mount & Blade series, and perhaps the Baldur's Gate series. If it resembles these games in its free and open ended structure, and unique and personal character creation and interaction, it'll work. Then, choose a list of quests to perform, and mods if you're on a pc and want them. Choose only large quest lines or long, extensive quests. As you do these quests, and with short filler ones in between, think more and more about your character, and in the events of the quests you chose, develop him/her. Did your character lose a close friend in this quest? How does it impact them? Is your character cruel and scornful? If so, will he/she ever change? How? These questions will lead you to character development. Maybe your character's morality and personality change. Maybe they used to help others, and act polite and charitable, but after they lost their father, they became spiteful, took up alcohol to escape their problems, and now is a wasting drunk. Maybe one day they hear a rumor, or are offered a quest, and the opportunity seems a fitting way to die, but when they succeed, they are sparked with new life, abandon drinking, and set off as an adventurer reborn. See what I did there? I just came up with a character, gave him a scenario, and all you have to do is apply it to the game you're playing. Obviously, you can't do this with Call of Duty, or other such games. This is where choosing the game is a key factor. If you ask me, Elder Scrolls is the way to go. The key to playing the character is by using empathy and immersion. You have to think like your character. You have to act like your character. In every sense, it's like acting. You have to be your character. So give them an extensive and though tout personality and maybe even history. The more you know about the game and its lore, the better. I can answer questions or give advice and ideas, if need be. Edited by Warden of Wisdom, Apr 23 2013, 05:00 PM.

Thank you for the advice. I never thought about developing the character as I went. I generally just come up with the backstory and try to stick to it. If anyone else has any advice I would still appreciate it. |
