HELLO LADIES AND GENTLEMAN AND WELCOLME TO THE NEWLY CONSECRATED MOVIE MEGATHREAD!!! ![]() What exactly is the purpose of this here megathread? Well the purpose of the Megathread is threefold: 1. REVIEWS 2. PREVIEWS 3. DISCUSSION To expand on that point, you can come to this thread to lay out an informal review of various films you have watched recently. You can also come to this thread to talk about upcoming movies which you are super excited about because if you don't you may leak vital fluids. Thridly, you can discuss and debate films and the like with each other. THUS THE MEGATHREAD! RULES: 1. Be civil. You don't need me to tell you that you shouldn't be a dick. So don't be one. Even if their opinion on Transformers 2 is "objectively" wrong. 2. Do not review movies you haven't seen, dumbass. 3. Try to contribute to the discussion. Don't go "This film sux". Don't be that guy. 4. Personal one here: No Lens Flare Jokes. Please for my sanity's sake. 5. Nobody wants to know which actors/actresses you perv over. RULES ABOUT SPOILERS: 1. Try to avoid spoilers if you can when you do talk about a movie. BUT it isn't a big deal if you can't. It's not like I'm gonna kill you. Yet. 2. Do not spoiler the title of a film and then give away the twist: 'Yeah 3. Just use them for the important plot stuff, really. Sorry to be all fucking RULESY with y'all. Enough of that boring crap, ON WITH THE THREAD!

REVIEW So to start off you schmucks, I'm gonna review a couple of movies I saw recently: OBLIVION This movie I saw with a friend and we both went into it with really quite low expectations. I mean, it had Tom Cruise in it who hasn't been good since he put on a fat suit in Tropic Thunder and it looked so genericy actiony sci fi...y. So when we came out after 2 hours, we were both pleasently surprised at how good that film was. I mean it wasn't perfect: the story was pretty generic, there were no major twists or anything. Morgan Freeman who had billed as a supporting actor in this movie, barely had any screen time whatsoever. And it was definitely a leading man Tom Cruise vehicle: soaring feel good message, Americana nostalgia, lots of shots of Cruise doing his best Keanu impression. But none of them were outright bad, but merely mediocre. In fact, the art direction was stunning and the soundtrack was brilliant. There were lots of standout cool action moments and clever cinematography. And the evil villains of the whole peice were suitably sinister and eerie. We left the cinema actually glad we had seen that movie and would reccommend it to others. We'll probably forget it with time, but I can't really say our money was wasted. RATING: B- OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN Now you don't know this but at university I studied International Politics with a minor in Intelligence Studies. Now I don't know whether that influenced how much I GODDAMN HATED this movie, but I'm sure at least some others in theatre had their intelligence insulted in some way. The whole premise of North Korea taking down the White House and holding the President hostage is ABSURD to begin with. North Korea can barely co-ordinate a buffet let alone a terrorist attack on the White House. "But Penguins," you say, "We don't care about wether it's plausible, is it a good film?" The answer is: HELL NO. Gerard Butler does a terrible job pretending to be a John McClane clone, there are plot holes so thick you could sail a aircraft carrier through them, the whole story could have ended half way through when they save the Presidents son, etc. etc. I could write page after fucking page about how this movie made me lose half my IQ just by watching it. The one good thing I can say is that the action is competent, but just barely at that. They front load it so much, that all the action in the final half of the movie is rather dull in comparison. In summary, DO NOT GO SEE THIS MOVIE. (If asked I could go into much more detail). RATING: D- IRON MAN 3 Now this I enjoyed. I've never understood why people thought Iron Man 2 was bad, but Iron Man 3 was certainly much better than it's predecessor. Robert Downey Jr. rocks it again as Tony Stark with the supporting cast more than up to the job of carrying the story. Which itself has it's good points and bad as it focuses more on spectacle and product placement than intricate plotting, although there are number of killer twists and wickedly tense death defying action scenes that almost make you wonder how much punishment one man can take. There are lots of good comedic moments especially when Tony, for story reasons (URGH}, has to partner up with a little kid and acts like a total dick to him all the time. The villain is wonderfully amoral and Ben Kingsley makes me take back all those nasty things I said about him in the Love Guru. The climactic final battle is a bit too messy to really be as awesome as it wants to be, but ultimately this is a worthy and quirky follow up to the Avengers movie last year. RATING: B+ HAVE YOU SEEN ANY MOVIES LATELY? WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THEM? DID YOU DISAGREE WITH WHAT I WROTE ABOUT OTHER MOVIES HERE? Edited by Penguins4Freedom, May 3 2013, 09:25 PM.

This is more of an interesting note than anything. In the newspaper I get, there's this guy who doesn't like sci-fi movies and reviewed Iron Man 3. He gave it 2.5 stars. I think that combined with his dislike of sci-fi, he had to give it a bad review because of some obscure message in it, which is... Spoiler: click to toggle ... I personally liked the film. I did really like that movie despite being a fan of the original Radio series and the books. I think it's rather Adamsy in it's own Hollywood way.
