We also all have our own opinions. Still think that scene was awesome.

I did really like that movie despite being a fan of the original Radio series and the books. I think it's rather Adamsy in it's own Hollywood way.

PREVIEWS

So schmucks what movies are you looking forward to seeing in the future? For me theres no contest:

PACIFIC RIM, BITCHES

GIANT ROBOTS THAT PUNCH GIANT ALIENS. GUILLMERO DE TORO! IDRIS ELBA! RON PERLMAN! NATALIE PORTMAN! FUCKING GLaDOS IS IN IT!

How can you not want to watch that?!?
Ugh, god no, this movie looks terrible. Why does Guillermo Del Toro have to waste his time on this? And Ron Perlman and Charlie Hunnam can stop doing cruddy action movies and get back to SoA. I absolutely despise Natalie Portman, horrible horrible creature. Too bad Del Toro is doing this, I like some of his stuff. It's just going to be another 2 hours of fancy CGI that gets old fast, with a plot with more holes than Michigan roads (we have a lot), and characters that have less dimensions than pong. "Look! Giant robots! Oh no! Everything is about to go wrong! Look! The protagonist saves everything, and got the girl!" I think we have enough of these movies.

Awww maaaaan :(. Seems like nobody's on my side in this.

I think I just trust Del Toro to not make a movie like you describe, especially considering his work in the Hellboy films. I think the assumption that this movie will be a dull Hollywood blockbuster with nothing between the ears is rather unwarranted. I mean this is not going to be Battleship. For one thing, they could've found some bigger names for the leading roles if they were going for that :P.

And plus, I think I must have been drunk or soemthing when I wrote this but it seems Natalie isn't in this film (not according to Imdb). Even if she isn't though, I think calling someone a horrible horrible creature is a bit far. Bad actress yes, but creature? She's not the Chupacabra :P.

Are you excited about any movies coming soon?

Ugh, Natalie Portman, still a horrible creature.
And yeah, Del Toro did a great job with Hellboy(s), but this doesn't look to have remotely the setup or potential as those.
I'm excited for the next Hobbit, which will probably be early-mid next year. Other than that, not really. Cinema has been in a really downward trend these last few years, with only a few names standing out as worthy of the money they make.

I've seen people make this claim as long as I've seen people talk about movies. It's simply not true. In fact, with the success of the Hobbit, Avengers, and Sherlock Holmes franchises, if anything it's currently in an upswing. There haven't been very many great movies released this year, but that's just the way studios release their movies. The fun blockbusters get released in the Summer, and Oscar-bait dramas get released in the Fall and early Winter. Already in May we've had Iron Man 3 and Star Trek, as well as the pretty-decent Great Gatsby. Pacific Rim, I don't know how you can't be excited about a Gundam punching Godzilla in the face. Do you honestly think, especially given his track record, that del Torro would make such a formulaic movie with such a great concept? The man isn't Michael Bay. Now sure, including GLaDOS for no other reason than that she's GLaDOS is a little worrisome and will probably be more than a little distracting while watching the movie, but that's really the only valid gripe at this stage with the miniscule amount of information that we have.

Anyway, this is kind of a strange year for movies for me. My three favorite books of all time are being adapted. The Great Gatsby and John Dies at the End have both already gotten kind of mediocre adaptations given the source materiel, but are fine movies on their own. But Ender's Game looks kind of... terrible. Which is a shame considering the talent involved. Hopefully they'll do a good job with it, and the marketing team just has their heads up their asses, but I'm not really optimistic about this one.

So... Star Trek.

Eh, I suppose I exaggerated it, but I can name nearly as many movies that I thoroughly enjoyed in the last 10 years as I can from the 80's or 90's (although all 3 decades have their absolutely terrible instances). And while I love Del Toro, every artist has the ability to screw up, and the concept looks really bad to me. Haven't seen the new Star Treks, never got into the series. Might watch them sometime.
I thought Iron Man 1 was meh, abd 2 was terrible, so I haven't seen the third.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

I must preface this by saying I've never been a Star Trek fan. This not due to some inherent dislike of the franchise but rather I have never been exposed to the series before apart from the last Abrams movie and the one with a whale. So I am not really fit to talk about whether this is a 'true' Trek movie. Trekker friends of mine complained about a movie with 'brawn over brains', something that goes against the classic scifi spirit of the series.

And it's hard to say that much has changed, this is still very much an action flick first and foremost. The action setpeices are visually spectacular, providing not only technical marvels but incredibly tense scenes, as the crew of the Enterprise run, jump and hang on for dear life as they get battered from one scene to the next. The jaw dropping action is one thing but the glue that holds the film together is the continuing relationship between Kirk and Spock, as their earlier animosity gone, their friendship is allowed to blossom into something genuinely touching. Pine and Quinto are now firmly comfortable in their roles allowing rather more pathos than at first guess. Cumberbatch provides a goosbump-like performance, his malevolent John Harrison proving not only a capable match for the Enterprise but rather firmly sealing his acting chops in my eyes. JJ Abrams also finds time to squeeze in some of that brainy ethical stuff that the nerds love so much, with Prime Directives being shattered and a rather apt metaphor for American imperialism, although this is never allowed to take away from the action.

That's not to say that there aren't flaws. The inclusion of Blonde Doctor seemed to have little narrative basis, with her character having not much to do but provide a cheesecake shot for the trailer. And there is a rather pathetic and may I say cynical attempt to garner some fan adoration by JJ abusing his 'parallell universes' conceit. But overall, this is a movie I will happily reccommend to people. Although maybe not to Trekkers.

Rating: B+

Also I got into an argument about this so I would like to know your opinions: Does Zachary Quinto make a good Spock?
