| Do all games need a "hardcore mode" option? | |

Fallout New vegas was the first game (I'm aware of) that gave us a real taste of survival with their hardcore mode and the need to drink, eat and sleep. And where healing applications were an over time affair, and more than a mere "potion" was needed to heal a crippled limb...etc. So, I have to ask; do YOU think all (or most) future games would benefit and be more enjoyable by including such things? |

If its optional to play and does not take away from the original image of the game unless the original ideal was to mainly make money I say yes depending the game. Does Hardcore only refers to being more realistic or does it mean more challenging??? |

I piked the last option as it made me giggle. Well a "realistic" mode of gameplay would only work in some games and not others. For example, playing Assassin's Creed with realistic Physics would probably mean you couldn't climb most buildings without breaking a limb or three. And there are some games in which it seems nonsensical. Like in Dragon Age, what exactly is a realistic way to depict magic? What does that even mean? Now a "survival" mode of gameplay, also has limitations. It would most often be suited to open worlds, where you can better forage and gather supplies. And again the type of game is important: COD:BLOPS would seem rather weird if occasionally you had to prepare an omelette during combat. That's not to say that I disagree with a "survival mode" being in some games where it is appropriate. Games thrive on challenges and the added difficulty of having to maintain you're PC health and well-being can oft bring a fresh perspective as well as an entertaining challenge. But this is provided that the survival mode is implemented correctly. Good examples of this would be F:NV and Metal Gear Solid 3. But you could very easily end up with the whole thing becoming more tedious than challenging, especially if every 5 minutes you had to take a piss or you're bladder would explode. The survival mode should be simple to use and not constrained by far too many steps; you don't want your FPS to break off every minute or so you could play Trauma Centre on your PC. Ideally the hardcore or survival mode should not be something clunky and tedious, but something that enrichens the experience that you didn't have the first playthrough or so. And it shouldn't be something tacked on, but something natural to the game that is just turned off in the normal mode. Strapping on a poorly thought out survival section would do more harm than good. And it should be something that makes sense in the context of the game. But apart from that, I don't see what possible harm it could do to add a mode like that to most games. Just don't expect me to play it. Because I'm a pussy. |
