General Rules 1. No swearing or insulting other players. That's pretty clear. If you don't like something someone else is doing, say so early (maybe in a short email to that person or to one of the admins) so that the matter can be settled before emotions run high. BUT don't insult or attack that player in this personal post either. We are all mature enough to refrain from personal attacks on other players, even in private emails. My experience says that nine times out of ten the trouble starts because something has been perceived much differently than it was meant. So please talk - and without the heavy artillery! It doesn't matter if you are in a heated discussion. You can disagree, argue - anything as long as you respect the other members of this board and conduct yourself accordingly. That means: no personal attacks, name calling, curses, threats, etc. will be tolerated. That doesn't mean, of course, that your characters can't swear from time to time, but ONLY IC. 2. No spamming If everybody follows the rules and stays IC, that shouldn't happen anyway. Basically, in the OOC Sections you can talk about whatever you like (as long as it's legal, stays within the boundaries of good taste, etc.), but … well, I guess we all know what spam is. Advertisements, which are welcome in the advertising section and nowhere else. Players are quite welcome to share the occasional site and whatever else they have found in the vastness of the web with the others, as long as it's within normal boundaries. If you want to share an URL or something and are not certain if it would count as spam, just ask me. (I don't bite.) 3. Use correct grammar. That includes the use of complete sentences, full words, punctuation and the shift key. I don't want to see anything like 'does sm1 hve an ansr 4 me. ty. cu l8r. lol' - you know, that kind of sentence that takes half an hour to decode and understand. "There," "their," and "they're" are three different basic words with very distinct meanings. There are people on this board whose native language is not English, so please don't make it especially difficult for them (and everyone else besides). Typos do happen, but I expect you to make an effort. 4. Rating We want to keep the game around PG-13. Some cursing (IC) etc. is okay, but if things get a little too graphic we might send you a friendly message asking to edit your post a little. Fading to black or using *** when in doubt might be a good idea. Characters 1. Both canon and original characters are welcome. We do not have a comprehensive canon list, so unless a character is listed as taken, he or she is available, even if not listed, book or movie character alike. 2. We don't have a character limit, but please make sure you can keep them all active. No, you don't have to post daily, and we are quite aware that life sometimes gets in the way, but please only take on as many characters for whom you can usually do at least one or two in-character posts per week and per character. 3. One character per account - meaning if you play several characters, you will have to use different accounts with the appropriate character name. There are nifty cookie swapping tools (for firefox at least) that allow you to switch accounts easily without having to log in and out each time. 4. All characters have to be approved by a Moderator before you can enter into the game. Please use our character application for that. The moderators might ask you to "tweak" (make small or even major changes to) them, but only if it is deemed necessary. Don't worry; They're not picking on anyone when they do this. It's just to make sure your character will fit well in the game (which should make the roleplaying easier for you in the end, too). You are also welcome to contact someone of the staff if you have questions or an idea for a character but would like some input during the fleshing-out process. 5. We few to no set-in-stone rules for the characters (within the boundaries of the setting), original characters especially, but we recommend that you read the character creation guidelinescharacter creation guidelines before posting an application. 6. Keep your character file up to date We all know that once a character is accepted and joins the game, they tend to develop further, so the bio might change over time. But please (!!!) don't suddenly add a new talent or skill only because it comes in handy at the moment during roleplay. It is quite possible that you will discover new aspects of your character, even new talents and flaws! Just make sure that they fit in with your character and have a base in his/her background and history. The character files have several functions. One is to give others on the board an idea of who that character is and how that particular player sees his/her character and is likely to play him/her. It is also a good opportunity for less experienced players who take on a character to think about and get a feel for characters. And sometimes it is just helpful to have a place to look up some details about the character that you are interacting with at the moment. So please, put a little care into this. 7. Characters in love This is only a minor point, but I want to mention it because of some very bad experiences. If your character happens to be in or fall in love with any other character, that's perfectly fine and natural, you can play it out as much as you like. But please, let the other player decide whether that feeling is returned, just like in real life. Okay? Roleplaying 1. Please, no one-liners ...or as seldom as possible. We understand that one doesn't always have a lot of time, and creativity can be elusive at the most inconvenient time, but at least try to give a picture of the surroundings and your character, the scene. We don't have a word count, just try to give your fellow roleplayers something to work with. Generally, a few sentences should be possible. If you feel unsure how to add a little more substance to your post, try our Roleplayers Guide for Beginners. 3. Stay Active Again, we know that this is not always possible. But we hope that at least one post per week (per character) should be possible. The exception, of course, are characters who have no active threads going on at the moment, which happens from time to time, especially for made-up characters. If you will be gone for more than a week and know about it in advance, say so in the OOC Forum, or simply write to me and I can let others know. Then at least we know what's going on and nobody will wait for a post that won't come for a week or more. At the same time, be patient if you happen to have more time on your hands than other players. 4. No god-moding You play your character, and the others play their characters. Simple. You may imply some of actions of the other character IF... they are only minor actions, if the other player hinted at his plans in a previous post, or there is really no logical option. And of course, you can include another character in your post all you like if you have that character's permission. 5. No meta-gaming. It is unavoidable that the player knows more than their character. Unless your character happens to be a clairvoyant (in which case they might be more insightful), do not use information your character does not have in your post. (For example, if your female character is just meeting my male character for the first time, she cannot know that he's lying about his profession.) 6. All in-character posts should be written in third person, past tense. It's just easier to read if everyone sticks to the same form. Accepting of the Rules 1. Please post in the Rules Agreement, stating that you have read, understand, and agree to these rules. Until you do this, your character will not be approved. Graphics 1. Avatars should be 100x100 px. Signatures should not be larger than 500x300 px. Anime and images containing inappropriate material are not allowed and will be deleted. 2. We do not require playbys, and face-claims are at your discretion. However, if someone has reserved a face-claim, you may not use that person in your avatar or siggy or anywhere else. |
