Yaren Comus; Former Imperial Captain gone rogue
Topic Started: 7 Sep 2011, 22:24 (382 Views)
Yaren Comus
full name: Yaren Comus, also known as the Old Timer by many of the crew - an apt description, given that many of them were born during or after the Clone Wars and did not enter service until years after the conflict had ended.

date of birth: 51 BBY

home: Formerly Anaxi - now lives aboard the Phoenix

species: Human

occupation: Former Imperial Captain - went rogue 5 BBY

affiliation: Himself, although his strong sense of honor, ironically resposible for his desertion, means he will often help those unable to help themselves

general appearance:

Despite his apparent age, Yaren is of incredibly strong build, more suited to be a stormtrooper by appearance than a starship captain, and likely would have ended up as one had it not been for his family history. Standing at 6' 5" and 172 pounds, his intimidating appearance was out to great use early in his career, and his sense of presence has not faded with age. While he is very well muscled his choice in clothing tends to hide it. He still wears his old uniform as do all of the remaining members of his crew (for practical purposes - for many of them it was all they had when his ship went rogue), although he and them have removed all indications of rank and military placement with the sole exception of the ship/unit patch and emblem.

distinguishing features: Apart from his sheer size and solid build, Yaren has a definate charisma and sense of presence that few fail to notice or ignore. His face is also slightly pockmarked with a small number of scars, the bulk of which were obtained during the Battle of Duro decades earlier.

indispensables A blaster pistol given to him by his father, as well as the standard issue blaster pistol given to most Imperial captains.

likes: While he may not appear so at first glance, Yaren is a enthusiastic intellectual, and has devoted a fair bit of his time since leaving the Imperial Navy studying a broad range of subjects in his free time, ranging from philosophy to military history that was passed over during his education in the Old Republic's Fleet Academy. He is also a firm believer in the idea that one should stick true to their convictions, and respects tenacity and sense of purpose regardless of the individual's belief.

dislikes: Alternatively, Yaren has little tolerance for ignorance, although that is not to be confused with a simple lack of knowledge. He is also disgusted by hypocrisy, and those who sell out their beliefs and sense of purpose may as well have sold their souls in his eyes, even if it was only for a moment - such individuals will never again have a chance to earn his respect, and those who already had it will have lost it forever.

strengths: A brilliant military commander in his own right, Yaren showed great promise during his Academy years, graduating all but undefeated during battle simulations and continuing to follow the trend during fleet actions. Quick on his feet and already a creative individual to start with, Yaren also exudes an almost overpowering sense of purpose and charisma - had he not been able to do so, only a relatively small number of his ship's crew would have remained loyal to him.

weaknesses/bad habits: While he is aware of it and loath to admit it, Yaren fully recognizes that he bears the mark of being slightly arrogant, and although not without reason he does what he can to keep it in check. Another factor that makes him difficult to deal with at times is that he expects every individual he works with to perform to the best of their potential, and drives them to do so if they fail to meet his expectations - an excellent trait in a military man, but not well accepted in looser circles of company. While he would never admit it, one of the major driving forces in his life after going rogue and likely the only fear he has is the thought of getting his crew into a position that they can't survive, and has struggled with the two possibilities that he may have been fighting for the wrong side from the start as well as the idea that he is doing something his father and mentors may not have approved of.

personality: Having recently passed fifty years of age by the time of the Battle of Yavin, Yaren is not entirely what one would expect of a rogue Imperial Fleet officer. While he shows the same drive and sense of purpose commonly found within the Imperial Fleet, Yaren also shows and sense of compassion and morality that was constantly at odds with his orders during his final years of service, and by the time of his desertion he felt no regrets - if anything, he felt honor bound to defy his orders at the time. Extremely intelligent but at times difficult to deal with due to the standards of excellence he expects from those around him, he has become something of a thorn in the Imperial Navy's side in the years since his departure, a feeling greatly augmented by his possession of the Phoenix.

family:

Tol Comus [deceased of old age, 11 BBY]
Malsia Comus [deceased of old age, 6 BBY]

other important people:
His crew - yes, all 2,550 of them (apprx.)

history: Born fifty one years before the Battle of Yavin to an old Anaxi family, it was all but decided from birth that he would seek a career in the Republic Navy. Living a mostly normal life up until the age of eighteen, Yaren's father, an aging Naval veteran himself, did the best he could to instill a sense of honor in his son, a virtue rather common before the formation of the Empire. Already capable of firing a blaster pistol with unnerring accuracy thanks to his father's tutelage and given the pistol his father had owned for sixty years himself, Yaren immediately enrolled in the Republic's Naval Academy when he became of age in 33 BBY. Graduating from the Academy at the top of his class in 31 BBY, Yaren looked on with disgust at the Senate's inaction regarding the blockade of Naboo, writing it up to both corporate lobbying, political incompetence and laziness, fully aware of how the situation would have been handled had it been one of the Core worlds like his home under siege. Using his views on the situation to further guide his own principals and career, Yaren would go on to serve with distinction during a number of anti pirate missions on the edge of what was considered Republic space, eventually being offered a place on the Outbound Flight Project as one of the many bridge officers, a position he would refuse for a different Fleet assignment, eventually being assigned to the Republic Cruiser Monitor III and serving in the conflict in 22 BBY that saw the near destruction of the cruiser by the Pirates of Iridium, an event that greatly changed his naysayerish attitude regarding the Jedi, afterwards viewing them as valuable allies worthy of respect. Continuing to serve in the Republic's armed forces despite the introduction of the Clone Army in 22 BBY, Yaren would go on to fight - and survive - some of the heaviest fighting during the Clone Wars, taking part in the First Battle of Kamino, the failed defense of Duro, the Battle of Anaxes, the Battle of Rendili and finally the Battle of Coruscant. By the end of the war Yaren had found himself a 32 year old veteran with more experience than most Navy officers, and in command of the Venator class cruiser, the Valiant. While deeply conflicted over the sudden apparent betrayal of the Jedi, Yaren nevertheless continued to serve within the now Imperial Navy, although it would be an event that he would remember and reprehense for years to come.

As violence in the galaxy began to wind down despite the whispers of a rising rebellion, Yaren did a great deal of work in the form of returning to anti pirate duties near the edge of the Core worlds, eventually being given a new command of a Victory II Star Destroyer in 17 BBY, using the newer ship's capabilities to astounding effect in his law enforcement duties and attracting the attention of several higher ups within the Imperial Navy. Offered the chance in 16 BBY to command a test run of ships being produced in 15 BBY, he accepted the offer, with his name being added to a list of 5 other captains who had been given the same opportunity. As soon as the first ships had finished being constructed he was transferred from his current command and given transport to the Rendili shipyards, and instantly had a liking for the Pheonix as soon as he laid eyes on it. Among the most powerful ships to be built at the time, Yaren's tactical and strategic genius more than made up for the vessel's inadequacies, and over the next decade he would slowly replace the original crew with officers and enlisted men that he had met and trusted over the previous years, using normal transferals and requests as well as favors and political maneuvering when he was told that the individuals he wanted were unavailable.

As the Rebellion began making itself more and more well known, however, his duties began gradually shifting from anti pirate and peacekeeping duties to suppressing suppossedly Rebel factions, even when there was barely any tangible proof capable of convicting the accused party, a fact that began to feed a deep seated unease within Yaren. It wasn't until 5 BBY that it came to a head, however, when the Phoenix was assigned to a taskgroup consisting of a Mk I Imperial Star Destroyer, 4 Victory IIs and an Interdictor cruiser with the goal of stopping a convoy of suspected Rebel sympathizers. While the capture and search of the vessels went smoothly, yielding only medical supplies bound for a refugee world, Yaren was shocked when the commander of the taskforce gave the order for the convoy to be destroyed under the assumption that the accusation of Rebel sympathies was correct. Ordered to take the lead position in the assault, Yaren refused, demanding to be shown proof that the accusation was valid, with negotiations breaking down as the Victory cruisers began moving to take out the convoy. Realizing that the government he'd served years before no longer existed and that the other captains weren't willing to listen to reason, Yaren ordered his ship to cover the convoy's escape and to disable any ships that attempted pursuit, taking heavy losses to his single ship ranks but decimating the opposition, disabling all four of the Victory cruisers with minimal losses and crippling the Star Destroyer while leaving all five ships intact with life support, forcing the Interdictor to stand down and allow the convoy to flee into hyperspace, escaping the confrontation himself only when he was reasonably sure that the convoy itself was safe.

Cut off from a command structure that he now refused to obey along with no way to feed the crew that had remained or maintain the ship under his feet, Yaren simply returned to doing what he'd always done, but instead of simply attacking pirates he now made an effort to "police" the actions of other Imperial ships, appropriating supplies and funds from the pirates and Imperial ships that did not stand down during confrontations.

role play sample: has to be of the character you're applying for, as it not only shows us how you roleplay in general but also how you interpret that particular character

Niice..

Sorry, I forgot to do this before accepting Jason's app, but could you please go into our rules acceptance thread and post your agreement?

Then I'll accept this one without a roleplay sample.

Oh, and if you want me to really love you, try using a few more paragraphs? I lost the line a whole lot when reading through this. (I know I know, before someone strangles me, I am guilty of too-long paragraphs myself. You'd be surprised how I started.)

Excellent! You're all ready to go. I am sure we can make good use of such a big ship. Epic threads, and maybe some epic battle in store.
