Inoans - The Seafolk

This world article pertains to Races

The Inoans, often called the Seafolk, live in five separate tribes on the Inoan Isles, south of Mantius. Each tribe specializes in trading different goods. If a tribe trades a good that is claimed by another of the tribes, the tribe that violated the trade claim is obligated pay the other tribe a sum of half of the profits of the trade good. This is known as the Trade Pact among the tribes, and any ship captain found violating the Trade Pact is executed while his crew is exiled from Inoan Isles. Those exiled crewmen are known amongst the Inoans as the Honorless. None of the Inoan Tribes will associate with Honorless, even if he/she is dying and an Honorless is the only person who is able to save him/her.

Among the Inoans, gender does not make you inferior or superior. A man or woman can be captain of a ship, and in the hierarchy of the ship's crew either can be higher than other.

Appearance

Posted Image

The Seafolk are lightly tanned from head to foot, and are derived from the Human race. They have black hair and striking blue, green, violet, or (in rare cases) pink eyes. It is not uncommon to see an Inoan with eyes of mismatching color. (Example: One blue eye and one green eye.) Inoans are considered quite exotic all across the world, though not many ever see them since they try to confine themselves to their ships and their homeland. Often the Inoans have intricate tattoos worked into their skin, which represents their tribe, rank, and which ships they own--if they are a captain.

Personality

Inoans are very reserved around other people, harboring suspicions that everyone is after their coveted trade routes or the secrets to building their magnificent ships. They dislike being on land, and have absolutely no pleasure of being landlocked. Though respectful of Inoans of higher rank than themselves, the Seafolk have sharp tongues and have no qualms with telling off someone who is not one of their race. Often Inoans are stubborn and arrogant, thinking little of the other races of Sara'Toga. They have short tempers and all but the lowest ranking Inoans speak as if they had the authority of the gods themselves.

Customs

The Inoan women do not wear skirts or dresses. All of the Seafolk wear voluminous trousers, and very few wear shoes unless they expect to be on land for an extended duration of time--and not many of them ever expect that. The women wear sleeveless blouses when close to land, and the men sometimes wear only vests to cover their chests if they are men of importance among the Inoans. When out at sea, the men and women alike shed vests and blouses, preferring to work with their chests bare. Men caught staring at woman's chest lustfully are thrown overboard--even if the man is married to the woman--and made to swim back to the ship.

Among the Inoans, lust and love, alike, are meant to be private. Showing strong gestures of affection in public is seen as weakness among the Seafolk, and weakness cannot be tolerated when you're sailing the dangerous seas.

The Seafolk bargain brutally but fairly. They will not overcharge for the goods they are trading by much, but they certainly won't be haggled down to cost--much less below cost. Begrudgingly, people all around the world admit that there's no better negotiator than an Inoan.

Tribes

The Inoan Tribes do not differ much but with the goods they trade. While most goods are fair game, there are a few goods that are allowed only to be traded by certain tribes.
