Have you heard the buzz?
An annoying high-pitched tone that most adults can't hear called the Mosquito which was originally developed to ward off loitering teens from UK shop-fronts but is now being used by teens around the world to receive text message and call alerts in class without the teacher being aware. Humans can usually hear frequencies from 15 Hz up to a maximum of 22,050 Hz, the frequency for the Mosquito ranges from 18,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Most adults tend to lose their ability to hear higher frequencies around the age of 20 so generally adults over 20 can't hear the sound. The ringtone may be heard by some adults at very close ranges but young people are much more sensitive to the high-pitched buzz so it can be heard from a farther distance.
The tone can be described as a high-pitched whining sound such as one that can be heard from a tv or computer monitor in a quiet room.
Although the sound was introduced as a "ultrasonic youth deterrent" last year, students started recreating it as a ringtone last June. The imitated sound quickly spread as a "the ringtone adults can't hear", drawing a lot of attention to the original developers who are now, in effect, marketing the original sound as a ringtone now advertised as "the authentic Mosquito ring tone."
Generic versions of the ringtone are widely available online for free, the only problems are that the sound can be distorted by your computer or cellphone. Media players often filter the audio and the computer or cellphone itself may be limited to producing frequencies that are audible to humans. So what you download may not be the true Mosquito tone at all or it may be but you might not hear it correctly. Or hear it at all. Cell phones must be turned off on Tokay Campus during school hours.

i've downloaded a bunch of different versions of that ring tone. some i can barely hear and others can literally make all the dogs in the neighbourhood go nuts at once and bring me to my knees in pain.
i've never heard it live though and i don't know if i'll ever be able to even with it going off right next to me.
