So, I thought it would be a fun, and possibly enlightening idea to make a topic about other literature and/or media about dragons that helped foster your interest in them (I really wasn't sure where to put this topic - it seemed out of place for the Movie Discussion area and The Books are specifically for Cressida Cowell's, so I have decided to place it here. ) and so I'll start with some of mine that I think have really helped my love of dragons to flourish. Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher by Bruce Coville. Synopsis: Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher From the back cover: “She was just a little dragon… until she grew, and grew and grew… “ The adventure begins… If Howard Morton and Freddie the Frog Killer were trying to hold you down so that Mary Lou Hutton could kiss you, you might run as fast as Jeremy Thatcher did the day he stumbled into Mr. Elives’ Magic Shop. And if you stumbled into that strange shop, you, too might be asked to make a choice. What would you buy? The Chinese rings? The Skull of Truth? Or the dragon’s egg? And if you did buy the dragon’s egg, what would you do when you found out you were supposed to hatch it? Hehe, yup, it was those statements that lured me into this story, and I bit it hook, line and sinker. It's because of this book that I learned that Tiamat was Queen of Dragons, so when AvannaK updated Hitchups recently it caused me to Squee because she'd used that mofit as well, and twas cool to see it resurface again - in a different story. Next up is Jane Yolen's four book quadtrilogy The Pit Dragon Chronicles . The books are Dragon's Blood, Heart's Blood, A Sending of Dragons and the final book, Dragon's Heart. These books also had great impact on me since they had fascinating concepts of dragons and bonders forming telepathic bonds with each other (something that pops up frequently in HTTYD fanfiction I've noticed) along with a political undertone that gripped me and kept me reading since Yolen uses themes of a long-abandoned penal colony-planet called Austor IV to illustrate tempestuous issues like 'how should the free govern themselves' and whether charismatic leaders should use terrorist ends to achieve their goals. The two main protagonists (read: human) are Jakkin and Akki and the beautiful mute dragon Jakkin steals as an egg and later trains for the pits, Heart's Blood. The two (ie Jakkin and Heart's Blood) have a very close, deep bond reminiscent of Hiccup and Toothless' camaraderie. And finally, for media! Discovery Channel made this gorgeous "mockumentary" Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real that aired on Animal Planet sometime during the summer of 2004, and I can recall seeing it around then. Here's a link: animal.discovery.com This one also had a great impact on me, since I have long loved the idea of dragons and have thought it would be cool if they truly existed, and this "documentary" did just that in a very believable way, and it even affected the mating scenes in my story Planet Attica! There you have it - here are the main books and media that have influenced me dragon-wise. What are you all's?

Amy: You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful and then you actually talk to them and five minutes later they're as dull as a brick? Then there's other people, when you meet them you think, "Not bad. They're okay." And then you get to know them and... and their face just sort of becomes them. Like their personality's written all over it. And they just turn into something so beautiful. If I ever have a boyfriend I want him to be like Rory Williams =) | |

The Flight of Dragons. Tis a 1980s film that is tragically underappreciated in which the magical fantasy of dragons is combined with theoretical science. It's delightful. The following book sets by Robin Hobb: The Farseer Trilogy, the Liveship Traders Trilogy, the Tawny Man trilogy, and the two Rainwilds novels. They are all more or less connected. In here, dragons live quite a long time, pass on their knowledge to their offspring through genetics, have the infant form of sea serpents, and impact humans when they are close enough--as in, giving the humans physical dragon traits. |

Wow, cool! The Flight of Dragons sounds truly fascinating, and I have always been fascinated in Robin Hobb's novels, especially since one of the trilogies has my name - Tawny - in it, so I am very interested in checking those out! ![]() and impact humans when they are close enough--as in, giving the humans physical dragon traits. Coooool.... what sort of traits I wonder? Oooh, I am so interested in these novels so much now!

Basically, everyone starts turning into dragon people. In the books there is this long-gone race called the Elderlings where that was exactly why they were considered a separate race. My favorite character grows scales, another girl actually gets wings. |

Wow, that sounds so fascinating... I think I'm going to have to put these books on my watchlist on my library account, they sound like so much fun and thought-provoking and people actually growing wings, awesome!

Indeed, the trilogies must be read in order for best comprehension. I second that plus Jeremy Thatcher and Jane Yolen. I don't think anything has affected my view of dragons... I let the definition and nature of dragons vary as needed. Chinese folklore, however, has impacted me greatly. The novel "Falcon's Egg" is quite similar to HttYD in theme. It's about a girl named Falcon who has trouble relating to her mother. She finds an egg, which turns out to be a dragon's egg. It's less fantasy, more family relationships. Loved it in elementary school. |

Let's see. I read a bunch of dragon-y things in middle school. I read the three main 'Dragonriders of Pern books' that revolved around Lessa, F'lar, F'nor and then the last book was White Dragon. Thy had a very neat world that Anne McCaffery wrote. There were two or three books called Dragon's Milk, and Flight of the Dragon Kyn which have very good female protagonists. Actually upon looking back the author, Susan Fletcher wrote a third one called 'Sign of the Dove' so I don't know if it has dragons but since it's number three of her dragon chronicles I'll assume there is. My ABSOLUTE favorite of middle school dragon reading was 'Dragon's Bait' by Vivian Van Velde. I like the way she portrays her dragon. It's a darker story, mostly deals with revenge and has another strong female lead. I think Backroads read it at my suggestion last year, it's an easy read. Pern would eat up the most of your time. It seemed like weeks before I'd see the end of one of those books. |

Yes, great books. Dragons were almost always cast in a negative light prior to the Pern series. Anne McCaffrey did a lot to change perceptions about them. I also suspect that the Pern books are responsible for much of the lore about dragons that was subsequently adopted by other authors and films. Things like telepathic bonding, dragon mating rituals, fire stone, etc. It was nice to see that HTTYD didn't outright plagiarize those things like so many others have. I read the "Dragon Keeper" series. This is the Order: "Dragon Spell", "Dragon Quest", "Dragon Knight", "Dragon Fire". (Might be spoilers!) It's about a girl who is "freed" from slavery and sent to a big city to serve the Great Hall. She finds a dragon egg before she is freed, and learns that she is able to "quicken" a dragon by keeping it close to her heart. She learns that she is a Dragon keeper, someone who hatches, bonds with, and releases dragons. She embarks on a journey with Warriors, I think she runs into i don't remember, on a wild ride for her safety. |
