I Don't Really Look Like This. Usually.

For me it was "The Dragonriders of Pern." As someone else mentioned, it was one of the first novels in the Western world to portray dragons as good creatures. It also showed how science fiction could be more organic- not always about spaceships and lasers. I always loved the aspect that science rather than magic was behind the things that happened in the books. The books were wonderful up to "All the Weyers of Pern." After that, the series jumped the shark.

I also liked "Flight of Dragons" as well as the book that was its inspiration, "The Dragon and the George." (I actually liked the book better, to be honest).

And each night I get the same number.
And when the stars won't come to be counted,
I count the holes they leave."

"The Hobbit" most inspired my dragon mentality.

Great, great suggestions everyone! And finally, here is that favourite favourite quote from Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher that I promised from I first introduced myself in the "Newcomers" area that I'd show to you all. :)

"Nothing you love is lost. Not really. Things, people - they always go away, sooner or later. You can't hold them, any more than you can hold moonlight. But if they've touched you, if they're inside you, then they're still yours. The only things you can ever really have are the ones you hold in your heart."
Miss Hyacinth Priest to Jeremy Thatcher - the moment in the book when Jeremy is holding Tiamat in his arms, reluctant to allow her to be free and return to her dragon home.

I love that quote in part because it's just so poetic - but wreathed in truth too.
Amy: You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful and then you actually talk to them and five minutes later they're as dull as a brick? Then there's other people, when you meet them you think, "Not bad. They're okay." And then you get to know them and... and their face just sort of becomes them. Like their personality's written all over it. And they just turn into something so beautiful.

If I ever have a boyfriend I want him to be like Rory Williams =)

Puff the Magic Dragon
by Peter, Paul and Mary.
My dad had it on a 45 RPM record and I found myself entranced by the song when it came out in 1963

I've never had the opportunity to read the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey but intend on reading the novels.

I found Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings' enthralling but never had a chance to see the movies.

Really? "Never had a chance?" Those movies have been out on DVD for years. What's the hold up?

Anyway, speaking of LOtR, is there any Toothless vs Nazgul's Fell Beast mash-up fan art? That would be one epic battle!

I have to admit, I did not watch the movies until Return of the King was released. I wanted to see them all together, hating the idea of having to wait each year in case of cliffhangers. (I am mildly allergic to cliffhangers)

Anyway, this is the closest Nazgul/Toothless related fanart I have seen

lol, silly me :/, forgetting about Tolkien when "The Hobbit" was very influential in creating the breakthrough for modern-day fantasy and also featured that fearsome dragon Smaug who Bilbo must face.

Oh! And I have remembered yet another another dragon film! And it stars our very own Chief Stoick! ;) (Lol, it appears that Gerard Butler has an inclination towards battling dragons :P ;)).

And it is... Reign of Fire a fantasy sci-film starring Butler as The Lancer Creedy to Christian Bale's lead character Quinn. And so yes, it is basically another film where humans fight dragons, but the catch here is that the dragons had been living apart from us peaceably until one is awakened and the whole world devolves into chaos as the dragons begin attacking all major cities until there are only a few scattered survivors left. The movie released in 2002 and also co-starred Matthew McConaughey. I recommend it for fantasy/sci-fi lovers, and it's very intense which is always fun! :D

I do remember reading the books as a girl when I would take my dinosaur out to get a bath in the river behind our house.

But, seriously, I did love the depiction of Smaug in the Rankin-Bass animtated film as much as in the book. Somehow they gave him a sense of tragic beauty- he was a magnificent creature, but so jaded and complacent- like a travesty of everything an honorable dragon would hate.

I am aware of Reign of Fire - and when you mentioned it, I remembered Gerard Butler starred in it. I never saw the film, though it's an interesting concept.

Reign of Fire is a pretty good film :) I advise anyone to check it out for 1) the dragons are marvellously depicted in CGI and 2) a chance to see Gerard Butler in his pre-Stoick days, still trying to carve a living out of a rough land whilst fighting dragons.

Oooh, and I have remembered another dragon-focussed film, although this one is animated but I always liked it a *lot*. It's about dragons and a dragon king and how they oversee human life in this fantasy land, but when the two human tribes take advantage of the dragons under an evil sorcerer, the dragons depart and it is not until the legends of the peaceful coexistence reach the ears of the main characters, a boy and girl, are the dragons and humanity brought back into harmony again.

The film is called Dragons: Fire and Ice and it's a TV movie from 2004. Mark Hildreth, whom I know because of his work in the Barbie animated movies, stars as the main prince Dev who reunites the dragons and humans. It's a very fun movie, I recommend it. :)

Hmmm.... given how I remember all these dragon-influenced books/media is making me inclined to believe that my love for the species of dragons hasn't ever been quite that latent... :P ;)

I haven't seen Reign of Fire since college. I think Backroads owned it. I was pretty impressed with it.
