I just finished reading the two Rain Wilds novels. I really enjoyed them and I'm looking forward to volume 3, which comes out in February. I kind of wish I'd read Robin Hobb's other trilogies first, but I wasn't aware they were interconnected. Can anyone tell me whether any of the same characters appear in them? I suspect that Captain Leftrin and the Tarman show up somewhere.

I wasn't crazy about the Rain Wild novels... I read the advance editions of both and didn't think they were up to par with the rest of the stuff.

The trilogy most connected with those is Liveship Traders, which is one of my favorite book trilogies EVER. As far as I can remember, there are no major characters in Liveship Traders and Rain Wilds.

For the proper order, read The Farseer Trilogy, then Liveship Traders, then Tawny Man Trilogy.

Okay, thanks.

I'm a bit surprised you didn't like the books, but I can understand if they simply don't measure up to the author's usual standards, which are pretty high judging by what you say. I will certainly check them out.

One thing that may put some people off the Rain Wilds books is that some of the main characters are gay. It's very subtle in the first book and gets slightly more explicit in the second book, but never to the point of being graphically sexual. All the same, fair warning to anyone thinking about reading them.

I was kind of surprised I didn't like them much, either. I saw them on my Amazon Vine account and I freaked out and was so excited to get them (and I am still hoping I get offered the advance copy of the next one). I think I called them a "soap opera" in my review. Yeah, I have high standards for that author. My cousins were the ones who had gotten me addicted to Robin Hobb in the first place, and while they liked the Rain Wilds better than I did they were still a bit disappointed. I had no issue with the characters being gay because one of my favorite characters in the whole freaking extended series still has not had his/her gender officially revealed (I believe it is a she based on various evidence) but if it's a guy, then he is definitely gay.

Dragon author Anne McCaffrey has died. :( The BBC just reported on it.

Amy: You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful and then you actually talk to them and five minutes later they're as dull as a brick? Then there's other people, when you meet them you think, "Not bad. They're okay." And then you get to know them and... and their face just sort of becomes them. Like their personality's written all over it. And they just turn into something so beautiful.

If I ever have a boyfriend I want him to be like Rory Williams =)

Apparently I need to read this Pern series. I'd never heard of it before.

Did you guys ever read Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke? I think it was the first dragon book I ever read. Don't remember much about it though.

And I recently read The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde. It has dragon-killing in it, yes, but its hilarious, and I think it portrays both the dragons and humans as grey instead of one bad, one good. But the main focus isn't on dragons, its on magic.

I will have to read Pern over winter break.

I think the first dragon series I read was Jane Yolen's "Dragon Blood", "Heart's Blood", and "A Sending of Dragons" when I was in 5th grade. Then "Jeremy Thatcher", and the next year I found Anne McCaffrey and never looked back.

A good book that's hard to find is "Dragon Companion" by Don Callander. It does have a bit of an odd writing style, but the story is good. Unfortunately it's out of print, and hasn't been made into an ebook yet.

I also liked the first 3 books in the dragon series "Joust", "Alta", and "Sanctuary" by Mercedes Lackey. The fourth got a little too Deus Ex Machina for me.

Elvenbane also has really good dragons.
