Lol, I've read every book in the post above except for Jeremy thatcher. Never even heard of it. The alta series was exceptional as well, 4th book like they said was a bit of deus ex machina but there was some foreshadowing.

Hmm there's another series that's quite interesting if not good that's called the obsidian chronicles by lawrence watt evans. The dragon's temple series by janine cross is also good if you're willing to stick with it past the first couple of chapters. It starts kind of slow.
In war, victory. In peace, vigilance. In death, sacrifice.

I just finished book #3 of Temeraire and have ordered the next three books from Amazon. You might say I'm hooked.

I like the formal 19th century writing style, the depiction of various cultures around the globe, and how they've adapted to life with dragons. The relationship between Laurence and his dragon Temeraire is so well developed, I daresay it rivals anything Anne McCaffrey wrote in her Pern books (though Jaxom and Ruth comes close). I love how Temeraire constantly questions human customs that must seem awfully arbitrary to a different species. Somehow, I can relate to that.

Reading these books reminds me that Toothless and Hiccup's relationship, while extremely touching, is still in its infancy. I can only hope that it approaches a similar level of development, even if the franchise is aimed at younger viewers than Temeraire. Toothless is still by far my favourite dragon, and definitely the one I'd want to bond with.

On an unrelated note, and as an aside to my other topic, I meant to ask whether anyone has read the Dragonology books. I scanned the thread but didn't see any mention. Apparently they are quite popular, so it's odd that I've heard next to nothing about them.

Currently reading Blood of Dragons, the final book of the Rain Wilds saga.

I've now read all seven books of Temeraire, and am awaiting the eighth instalment due in August. I probably echo the sentiments of most when I say that the series lost some steam after the fourth book. While still enjoyable, I hope the next book brings a return to form.

I also recently read Anne McCaffery's 'The Renegades of Pern', which I picked up used. I'd been a fan of the original Pern novels (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon), but her subsequent novels are generally hit-and-miss. I picked this one up because the plot sounded interesting -- it focused on lives of people outside the Weyrs, with the story told in parallel to the events of the original novels. The story was decent, but not very dragony. I had to push myself to finish it.

Can't believe nobody's mentioned "Jane and the Dragon" yet.

For that matter, I can't believe I have never seen one single crossover fanfic or piece of fanart between the two.

I've seen crossovers with Rise of the Guardians, Brave, Tangled, Halo, Terminator, Percy, X-Men, Marvel and DC comics, Assassin's Creed...just 'bout everything out there...except one the few series that would actually make sense!

Come on! They were both "children's" series, that turned into CG shows, featuring the bond between lonely dragons and lonely/outcast humans, with the dragons helping them to achieve their dreams. Plus, no offense to people who liked the movie Brave, but Jane is MUCH more compatible for a crossover than Merida would be, 'specially in relation to getting along with Hiccup or Astrid or Toothless even dragons in general.

Sorry, don't mean to rant. :worried:a

I guess what I mean to say is, if you haven't checked out Jane and the Dragon, it's very good, both in book form, and as an animated series, in my opinion. Yous hould try it out! :)

I saw one episode of "Jane and the Dragon". I've been meaning to catch the rest, but I have a hundred other books/shows/films in my queue, and it never seems to end.

Crossovers... ugh. I think Brave is popular for HTTYD crossovers because the time period and geographical locations closely match up. But I seriously don't see the point in crossovers, at all... they just make a mockery of the respective franchises.

I've been missing the dragons in the last few episode of Game of Thrones. I know it's probably for budget reasons, but still. Every scene with them was awesome, especially them interacting with their "mother" is highly entertaining to watch. Probably some of the best effects I've ever seen in a TV show.

I'm actually really annoyed because I keep hearing spoilers for the latest season of Game of Thrones, and I'm only just finished watching the second season. It seems like people don't realize that not everyone gets HBO. I had been waiting for the DVD's to come out, but I might have to start downloading just so I can keep up because I'm tired of being spoiled. I partly blame Twitter, etc, because of the effect it has at spreading these spoilers. It's prettty bad when I don't even use Twitter, or go looking for spoilers, and I still can't avoid them. I was even spoiled by my local news station.

I started reading "Eragon" last week, and I'm about to finish it this weekend. I never got to reading it when I was younger, but since I'm really into dragon-related stories I thought I'd give it a try.

Although it is indeed a pretty derivative work, that didn't stop me from enjoying it. I had a great time reading it, and it did a good job getting me through 6 hour night shifts I had this week - I'll definitely read the other books too as soon as I can. It's far from perfect, but what really sells it is the relationship between dragon and rider which reminded me a great deal of HTTYD. Saphira has the same protective nature as Toothless over her rider, and although communication is far simpler with them, their conversations sometimes made me think that this is how Hiccup and Toothless might talk to each other if they could.

Would definitely recommend this to any HTTYD fan out there.

By the way, I haven't seen the movie, and I don't plan to.

As the topic says not only about literature but also about media in general, I want to add two pieces of music here (instrumental). Both were composed by BrunuhVille and posted on YouTube. I like them very much.

Cry of the Dragons

I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.
