Wow. This might get Patrick Doyle his third academy award nomination! LOVE the scottish tone of it, it's even much more present than in HTTYD's score (which makes sense). Just listen to that orchestra opening "Fate and Destiny" or "The Games Score". It sounds like straight out of a Edinburgh Military Tattoo concert. However, I'm really glad that there's a good deal of dramatic ("Get the key score") or quiet, emotional pieces ("In her heart score") as well. Damn, I really didn't expect this score to be this good. I don't think it has the same stand-alone value as John Powell's score, but for fans of HTTYD's music, this will definitely be one of the year's score highlights. Can't wait for the official release. Yes, I heard the soundtrack samples, too, on You Tube Patrick Doyle's soundtrack has gotten a 4/5 on Filmtracks. According to Filmtracks about the movie rather than the soundtrack: "The subject matter of Brave is darker and more adult-oriented than its predecessors." There is apparently a lot of comedy in the movie but it also should have some very serious possible outcomes for the heroine and her family if things don't get resolved. On the soundtrack, I thought the Gaelic "Fair Maiden" duet was very touching. It makes me think that is a scene at the beginning of the film when Merida is a very little girl and singing with her mother. Edited by Fjord Mustang, Jun 18 2012, 11:31 AM.

It seems to be getting fairly good reviews! The popular german website Filmstarts.de, which I personally trust and visit frequently, gave it an outstanding 4.5 out of 5 Stars. They called it a captivating adventure with breathtaking, flawless animation (even the best and most realistic ever put to film), fantastic action and a very fun and interesting story that has its darker parts. If you're german, here's the complete review: http://www.filmstarts.de/kritiken/135528/kritik.html On a side note: They gave HTTYD 4 out of 5 stars, which is already pretty great. But a 4.5? That's REALLY rare. Now I can't wait to see this movie! |

An interview with Patrick Doyle about his soundtrack can be found online. click It's very interesting that he states that Merida's strong character also influenced his score. |

Wow not all glowing reviews on RT. One critic even references "magical elements"
Well so much for producing their first truly "organic" film which I thought this was going to be. Now how much do you all wana bet that this film will still reach $3/4 billion just because it bears the Pixar name? Cars 2 beat HTTYD despite very lack-luster reviews. |

@Walter and Erazer- thanks for the links. Those were interesting articles. @O'Neill- I'm scared the movie won't be good, too, but I still have hope in it for now. I'm trying to ignore the reviews and focus on my own perceptions when I see it. To me, there's nothing wrong with magic since this is a fairy tale film based on Celtic fairy tales, and these do have a lot of elements of spells, prophecies, shape shifting and misleading curses. I think the movie is potentially hurting from its marketing (Disney has done some pretty good misfires with marketing lately). They changed the name of the film from The Bear and the Bow to Brave , and I think that tilted the whole theme of the story in a misleading direction. The trailers make it look like it's a quest journey film where Merida the rebellious teenager is the one to save the kingdom and show her point of view was the right one. There are elements of that, but the heart of the film is actually about the relationship between mothers and daughters and fathers and daughters and being careful what you wish for (that is a very, very Celtic fairytale theme). It's also about accepting responsibilities for the decisions you make and learning to understand other's perspectives. I think this disappointed reviewers who were expecting either a comedy or a quest-adventure with a princess who becomes a warrior (which is what I thought it would be). I like this cautionary and family-oriented angle, myself, since it turns the whole typical animated fantasy fairy tale on its head with a much darker struggle that Merida and her family have to face. I'm worried I will hate the film, but so far I've liked the ideas about it. There aren't a lot of sympathetic mother-daughter relationships and father/tomboy daughter as best buddies themes in Western animation (mothers are usually dead or absent in Disney animated films). But then this potentially would turn off some male viewers, and this might be why some critics don't like it. I just hope Merida is a charismatic character like Korra that boys will be drawn into her struggle. The situation she faces with the consequences of the curse could have been done just as believably with a male protagonist rebelling against taking a position of responsibility and then drawing the family into a curse. This review is an interesting take. It's from a religious publication, but I have liked how this reviewer focuses on the sociological and cultural implications of animated films. He had a great review for HTTYD, too. Edited by Fjord Mustang, Jun 19 2012, 11:47 AM.

I'm debating whether to catch this in the cinema or wait for the DVD. The Japanese trailer made me want to see this, but everything else I've read confuses me. I do prefer the old title, yet I have no clue what role the bear plays or it's relationship to Merida (perhaps that's spoiler material?). I read the review you linked and it sounds like it's pretty heavy on the mother-daughter angle. Now I'm confused whether I'd feel comfortable watching this film alone in the cinema, being a grown man. I kinda hoped it was more epic adventure type of movie, now I'm not sure. I think I might end up waiting for the DVD. |

While I'm still feeling a bit skeptical I'm going to catch the midnight premiere. The Japanese trailer seems to do the film more justice than what I've seen so far, and I've learned to not trust trailers/reviews wholeheartedly. I'll just have to go see for myself and hope for the best. If anything, the score is fantastic. |

@Night Fury- The bear does play a huge part in the mother-daughter relationship and also the dark turn of the story, but it would be a spoiler to give away just what it is. I hope that the movie has enough epic adventure and drama in it so it won't turn away people regarding the mother-daughter issues. It's supposedly the darkest film Pixar has done. I actually go to most movies by myself, so I know how awkward it can be sometimes. I'm a middle aged woman, so I seem very out of place when I go to a Marvel comics action movie, a sci fi movie or an animated film. (or when I go to comic book stores). It's worth it for me,though, to see some movies on the big screen. So far, no one seems to really care so long as I pay the admission price for the ticket.
