I saw the trailer for this movie before the "Titanic 3D" movie last week. It's called "Rise of the Guardians" and is one of the Dreamworks movies being made by Guillermo del Toro. The trailer is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPLiBxhoug0 It seemed pretty hopeful they are focusing on the dream-like fantasy aspect rather than slapstick comedy, and they referred to it as "From the creators of 'How to Train Your Dragon'" so they want this to be a story, not comedy. It seems to be about how the magical beings of our childhood are actually an action hero team who protect children from dark nightmare beings preying on their imagination and dreams. I like the very unconventional, more gritty take on these legends. Santa Claus is like a Russian Stoick and has tatoos. The Easter Bunny is an Australian daredevil, the Tooth Fairy a bird-creature rather than Disney fairy, the Sandman an quasi steam-punk inventor type. There's also supposed to be a Jack Frost character, though he seems like he will be introduced later and he is more ambivalent about being good or evil. I like the general look of the picture. It's really atmospheric and reminds me of some of things done by Jim Henson (the Dark Crystal, Labyrynth), the Twilight Zone series and some of Tim Burton's concepts. Sounds amazing, though I think I would prefer a slightly (only slightly) more mature tone to the story. |

I can understand. I also hope for it, too. Del Toro has the potential to bring that darker side to it. It's still too early to tell. We don't know the rating for it yet/ I was reading in a copy of "Entertainment Weekly" at the gym today that it's based on a series of books called The Guardians of Childhood by the children's book writer/artist/animator William Joyce. He's also working on the film, too. His books have a serious side as well as a magical side to them. Apparently he got the idea for the series from his daughter when she asked him if Santa Claus knew the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy personally. That gave him the idea to portray them all as a kind of action team to protect kids from the Nightmare King - based on the most terrifying concepts of the bogeyman, who really is a scary figure for children. Each of the guardians has a code name like a superhero: North, Bunnymund, Tooth, Sand. I remember seeing Meet the Robinsons from Disney, which was based on one of Joyce's books. It was quite intelligent for kids and very imaginative. Also very serious, too, in many parts. I think this movie (hope this movie) will have a darker edge to it regarding the Nightmare King and his danger. The article I read also mentioned Joyce's daughter died at 18 years old from a brain tumor recently, so this project is one of love for him since she inspired him to create it. He wanted to go on with the series in her memory. Edited by Fjord Mustang, Apr 12 2012, 08:44 PM.

The Avengers for children This trailer looks amazing. I was expecting that the serious tone in the trailer would turn comedic but it never did. This makes me confident that the final movie will keep this tone. Edited by Walter Roehrich, Apr 15 2012, 12:01 PM.

The animation looks downright amazing in this! That's some of the most impressive animation I've seen in a long time. Granted, I was never a fan of these cheesy Christmas movies, especially when they try to shove their "Believe in Santa" message down your throat (I'm looking at you, Polar Express...). I like seeing that they don't take it that seriously, while it still does look like a nice movie for christmas time. I don't think it can be much more than that, but I'm looking forward to it anyway. BTW, Soundtrack by Alexandre Desplat! Neat. Edited by Erazer, Jul 9 2012, 02:45 PM.

Thanks for this! I see they have brought in Jack Frost, now. Interesting how he has already become the favorite character among Deviant Artists. I was rather dreading he would wind up being kind of gloomy and emo-ish. I'm glad it seems he will be more of a free-spirited type with a sense of humor. I already like all the team- they each seem to be so original and cleverly done, but Bunnymund, North and the cute, silent Sandman are my favorites so far. I hope this means Dreamworks is really on a good streak of creative and adventerous movies. Certainly the author of the original books has some great creativity in his favor, and I hope the movie brings that out. |
