HTTYD actually made almost twice as much money as this. This is more of a cult film though, I think. I just got the Blu-ray from Amazon, so I'll be watching it shortly. |

Hahaha, yes. It was one of the lowest opening weekends for DreamWorks ever.

Just saw this on blu-ray. I didn't think it was outstanding, but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would! I was never a big fan of Christmas movies, but this one was a lot of fun to watch. A lot of the enjoyment comes from the characters, I think. In movies like this where there is so much variety to them, there's usually a favorite, and some you enjoy less, but this wasn't the case here. I liked each of these in their own way. Jack Frost was very likeable as the lead, Santa was hilariously over the top, the sandman and the tooth fairy were very creatively done... if I did have to choose a favorite though, it clearly would be the Easter Bunny. I don't know if it's the accent, Hugh Jackman or his dry attitude, but I really did like him the most. I think he got most of the laughs, especially in interaction with Jack. I was absolutely blown away by the animation. It was honestly some of the best I've ever seen. It was heavily stylized and fast-paced, but it only worked in favor of the movie. Especially the sand effects were beautiful to look at, as were all the lighting effects - writing down everything I loved about the animation though would take hours, so I just recommend you see for yourself. It's just a stunningly beautiful movie. The story itself held up fairly well too. It took me a bit to get into the fast pacing at the beginning, but it was a lot of fun as a whole. It was much more clever and thought-out with its themes than I expected, and was WAY darker than I thought it would be. The only aspect I was a bit underwhelmed by was Jack's backstory. After all that buildup, I think it would have liked it to be more dramatic. Sure, you don't have to go all genocide territory like Kung Fu Panda 2 did, but a little bit more drama at this point would have been very effective - it seemed to me like they simply didn't dare to go further, but in my opinion, this would have helped to get the audience in a deeper level with the movie. Apart from that though, I really enjoyed this movie. In fact, I could imagine watching it every Christmas. Bummer that it didn't do so well, but even if it was a financial failure, it definitely was an artistic success. |
