Yeah, seriously. If he wasn't legitimately American, he wouldn't be president, period. We're the most security obsessed nation in the country, I would hope we can figure out where someone was born... =P Love the post about bipolar partisanship as well. Democracy shouldn't mean picking which candidate you dislike least, which tends to happen when you get two polarized options. More parties would serve the US well, I think. Additionally, if the parties could stop squabbling like small children, that would help too. ;3 |

What really gets me is that the polarization is largely imaginary. According to the political compass, most of the major candidates occupy a small area of the spectrum: http://www.politicalcompass.org/uselection2012 Obama is furthest left, but only by a small margin. Ron Paul is the only libertarian candidate, but he is still very right wing. A comparison to the Canadian compass shows that Obama occupies a position similar to that of Canada's governing Conservative party. http://www.politicalcompass.org/canada2011 Also note that unlike the USA, Canada has major parties that occupy the center of the compass. |

That is a very interesting point of Canadian politics. |

If Backroads would rejoin the conversation, she would probably list the social programs of the government she does like. Because she does like some of them. But yeah, we've been through this many times, and she is pretty much Ayn Rand in idealism even if thinking it's not 100% realistic. I'm pretty much with the Democrats, but I haven't been terribly pleased with Obama even though I voted for him last. I am in favor of quite a bit of government spending, actually, but Obamacare and stuff like that doesn't sit well with me--though I do think with more specifications I would be happier with Obamacare, but as it stands there's far too much opportunity for abuse. I actually kind of like Romney. If we could get a candidate that was half-Romney, half-Obama, we would have a bizarre politician but at least I would vote for him/her. So I guess I'm saying that if Romney (let's face it, he'll probably be the Republican candidate at this point) wins I'd satisfied, and if Obama wins I'd be satisfied. I do think another round of presidency would be good for him, give him another chance. I do like government programs that help people, but I do have to say I've met far too many people that don't bother to help others just because they figure that's the government's job. I'd like to see a welfare program reform with a little more focus on jobs and training and education. |

I think we have a thread on the political spectrum already. Good points on Obama here. I think those who call him a communist or socialist have no idea what he stands for or what those political idealogies actually entail. Not to send this thread on a tangent, but I kind of wish he'd be in favor of same-sex marriages. I think we need a deciding opinion from someone high up. Then again, I don't know if I'm in favor of taking away states' rights on that particular policy. |

I'm of the opinion that privately the President has no qualms with same-sex marriage but can't politically commit to it. Most gay voters vote Democratic anyways, and President Obama(like most candidates) is after swing voters. I'm going to be voting Democratic like I did in 2008, until I become a millionaire will I vote Republican. |

Hah! My lesbian neighbors (sweetest ladies you'll ever meet) are staunch Republicans. The only different from your stereotypical Republican voting is the gay marriage issue for them. |

Are those the neighbors that make the diaper cakes? I need to meet them. Yeah, I'm not opposed to some social planning, but I think it's more of a result of the people creating rather than the government. I'm okay with the government helping, I'm not okay with the government organizing my life for me and telling me what I can and can't do. I'm pretty neutral on welfare. I think it has its place (and I think the money side of it is fine as not everyone who is on hard times is in need of immediate education and training). I actually like the idea of using the welfare program to complete community/government projects--as in, we will pay you such-n-such for a few hours' of collecting trash, filing papers, etc. I don't think that kind of work is degrading. You do what you need to do to take care of yourself. Also keep in mind I have a wild definition of "hard times". USA poverty is for the most part nothing compared to other definitions of property out there. |
