I don't have too much issue with Obama serving a second term, though I must admit I'm not an Obama fan. There's fundamental differences between our philosophies. I KNEW my guy wasn't going to have a chance, being a third party altogether, so while I would have preferred Romney as his views are closer to mine, I'm not terribly upset. My only concerns are taxes and healthcare costs... I do know several small businesses that will struggle staying open with those in place.

Actually, Romney is no different than Obama on healthcare. He signed the exact same Obama-styled healthcare mandate when he was governor of Massachusetts, then tried to distance himself from it during his campaign. He has in fact changed his position on a few issues, deciding to portray himself as a conservative rather than the moderate he was as governor.

As for tax rates, I think small business will do just as well under Obama. It's the large corporations that have more to worry about in regards to taxes.

The way I see it, if Bush deserved two terms, Obama certainly deserves at least that much. Four years was simply not enough time to undo the damage from the global economic downturn, nor was it long enough to reverse eight years of Bush policy. People who voted for Obama in '08 hoping for miracles need to realize this, and I think that for the most part the American public understand what he was up against.

Republicans will finally have to bend a little and work with Democrats if they want to avoid a worsening of the fiscal situation.

My thoughts exactly. It's a healing process and what took a decade to put us in this situation may take a decade, or more, to get us out. Unfortunately, our country in recent times hasn't shown much for perseverance or patience.

This election was pretty entertaining from my end of things. I mean, I watched what I could online, got some nice satire from Colbert and Stewart, saw people freaking out in ridiculous manners from both sides... all in all some nice American dramatics.

I didn't follow the election that closely, but overall, I'm glad Obama got re-elected. I definitely do prefer him over Romney. I think in the last 4 years, he achieved more than people sometimes give him credit for.

I could never really sympathize with Romney, especially his reputation as a flip-flopper when it comes to controversial themes often confused me. He just never showed a strong sense of consistency, as opposed to how he often advertises himself.

I'm no expert in this though. I also can't really tell whether I support Obama's re-election because of his actions, or because I just like him more than Romney. It's really easy to bring subjective opinions into this, because Obama does seem like the guy you'd totally hang out with, while Romney usually comes across as a rational businessman.

This election definitely was a fantastic source for comedy though. I especially enjoyed Bill Maher's comments, and don't even get me started on these brilliant parodies on youtube. I definitely did find it all entertaining.

@Backroads-- I think you and I might have voted for the same candidate. I knew he had no chance to win, but he had some awesome social media campaigning tactics and speeches and commercials including an endorsement from GQ as the sanest candidate. He didn't win, but his party got more votes than they have in history, so more people are realizing they aren't wasting their vote by voting for what they believe in and that third parties are an option.

For me, I wasn't surprised Obama won. I was predicting it myself, and I really have to admire how he took advantage of the social media. He also made a lot of decisions and political gestures during his second term that I think helped win him the Hispanic and the GLBT community. I also think the quick response his administration made during Super Storm Sandy also swayed a lot of people's decisions. The New Jersey governor is a Republican, but he was very quick to praise and endorse in his own way Obama for how the President's administration came to the assistance of New Jersey folk. It also should be a sign that the black and Hispanic voters are an important block, as are single women-- all of whom were significant in the votes. These groups are now very influential.

The Republicans should have a wake up call that they need to change the way they do things and get more connected with some of these groups who heavily supported Obama. And on using newer technology like social media more effectively.

I am mostly concerned that we are back at square one with a Democratic President and Senate and a Republican House-- the same structure as before. No decisions were getting made and no compromises from either Party because we don't have a strong middle of the road element in Congress. It's very bipolar. I don't think they are going to resolve the fiscal cliff issue, so taxes and budget cuts all around. Either way the middle class and poor will have to pay taxes so it's mostly the powerful 1% who will have to pay more taxes, and they are not for that. Keynsian ecomomics versus Trickledown all the way.

This election really was irritating for me with all the mud slinging and general lack of focus other than ideologies. It's ironic that this was the most expensive campaign history and yet so little came out of that advertising but mudslinging.

@NightFury from the Great White North (yes, I love Canada very much)- I hope when your elections come around you get a topic started on it for us. It'd be good for us to see more of how your country's process works and see which candidates we would choose in theory.

Oh, the financial/tax thing was a separate issue than Romney's plans. Sorry for the confusion, paragraphs are good things!

I actually voted for Virgil Goode... I don't know if he would fit your taste.

Ah, yes, Virgil Goode and the Constitution Party. He was one of the people taking part in the Free and Equal debates, and I was happy he had a chance to present his platform. You're right-- he wouldn't be my personal preference. However, he did a good job in his debates, and he was very open and honest about what he stood for and people seemed to admire him for that. The Free and Equal debates were a really good mix of different viewpoints that you rarely heard in the Romney and Obama debates.

And the mudslinging provided entertainment for other nations, if nothing else BDrewq

@ Fjord - I didn't think anyone would be interested, but I will try and remember to make a topic. The next election isn't until 2015, so we'll see if this board is still around by then.

@ Backroads - Yeah, I got you. And don't think he would be to my taste either.

According to a "vote match" quiz, I'm most compatible with Obama, followed closely by Gary Johnson and Jill Stein. I took the quiz a second time and came up with a slightly different order. Rocky Anderson wasn't an option on the quiz, but I kind of like his platform as well.

Bwahaha. Oh, us Constitutionalists are rather hated (I consider it, along with the Libertarian party, to be true conservatism). I'm registered with the Constitution party, but I don't always vote for all of them (I'm proud to say my ballot was very mixed party-wise). But, out of all the platforms I heard, Goode's was what matched my personal views the closest--and I do tend to be an idealistic voter as I figure a lot of the technicalities promised aren't always within the president's power.
