I don't know what kind of miscommunication happened there, but I can assure you that we don't pay 40% for health care in Canada. She may have been trying say that her total income tax rate was 40%, which would be the combined federal and provincial tax rates. Even then, she would have to be making a substantial income to be paying that much... in excess of $132,406, judging by the chart below. Canadian tax rates for 2012: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/fq/txrts-eng.html Edited by Night Fury, Jul 24 2012, 01:20 AM.

Hi Night Fury, I stand corrected. I came across this on Wikipedia today and I think it is well balanced and shows both sides well. One of the items mentioned was the cost increase in public funding.
That means taxpayers. But it should be noted that the Canadians have had some form of government sponsored health care for some time (Saskatchewan in 1946). Also of note is the table at the end of the article. You're right Azdgari, in that the overall life expectancy is the shortest of the G8 countries and that the mortality rate is the highest. Those are things that we all agree that we should improve. But it also should be noted that the US already spends as a percentage of GDP, as a percentage of government funding spent as the highest among the G8. How will enacting or repealing Obamacare make it better considering what the Congressional Budget Office said today?Well according to the Congressional Budget Office it turns out that enacting the Affordable Care Act will cost $1,168 billion dollars while the repeal will cost $109 billion dollars, each over a period of ten years. So how is Obamacare good for the country? Considering the CBO quote:
So we want to risk this much change on something that is not only uncertain but will cost more over time? EWO

The funny thing about Robin Hood: What'd he do other than rob a bunch of nobles? It may have been to help the poor, but in a feudal system, who do you think is directly responsible for feeding and caring for those people? Serfs rarely had money on their own, and had almost a childhood-grade dependency on their feudal lords. (Not saying a feudal system is a good thing or anything.) Feudal lords may have gotten a castle and more livestock or whatnot, but often lived in similar conditions as those they were in charge of. Any taxes were collected by them for local storehouses for public uses, emergency food, etc.. So if the King were to start heavily taxing the lords who served under them, nobody has any money left. In other words, the reason that the poor felt the pinch so badly is because property was owned by a collective, and taxed that way as well. It wasn't Robin Hood who put King John in his place. It was those Feudal lords. And what a grand mutiny it was: They're the ones who forced King John into signing the first thing that can be considered anything close to a constitution, limiting his power. (I can't believe I'm descended from that tax-grubbing loser...) Now, here in the States, there is no king. The 1%ers make the kind of money that allows them to take off and take their business and money with them if pushed too far. The middle class, for the most part, can't just up and jet off to Costa Rica or something. Once again, they're the ones who are punished the most. |

Very true about the middle class. Heck, I'm part of it. I just don't know if I can blame the 1% simply for having made money. |
