Chick-Fil-A; Might be of most interest to the Americans, but I figured we should do another politically thread.

So... thoughts on the Chick-Fil-A ban?

Mine:

If the opinions are simply the opinions of the owners are don't affect employment or service, who cares?

If you are going to boycott this, I assume it's because you ALWAYS research the personal beliefs of the owners of all companies as part of your consumer responsibilities.

When do you simply become intolerant of someone else's intolerance?

Although I can halfway understand why people would just cut out Chick-fil-a, I don't really feel the need to. Though I do think that the owner telling everyone that he doesn't approve of gay people/gay marriage was pretty much a business shot to the foot. I mean, nowadays that's a pretty touchy subject, so if you don't agree just keep it to yourself!

What I have to say to the boycott is, although it's not really fair to everyone else who works there and doesn't share that opinion it's not like you can't find chicken and french fries somewhere else.

And as for the owner himself....this is probably the only time I'll tell someone to just shut up and make me a sandwich.

My sympathy goes out to the franchise owners who are on the front lines dealing with the fallout from the owner's indiscretion.

His personal opinion has nothing to do with the business of serving food, so perhaps he should have kept it to himself. You would think that any successful businessman would be intelligent enough to know this.

There are no Chick-Fil-A restaurants in my country to my knowledge, but I will remember his comments should they ever decide to expand here. However, I should add that I think an outright ban is going too far, and would probably be grounds for a legal challenge.

Although I disapprove of his comments, I don't think it's fair or right for someone in a position of political power to try to prevent Chick Fil-A from doing business based on the personal opinions of its' owner. :3

I'm rather neutral on the for-against gay marriage thing--I personally believe two consenting adults should be able to do whatever the way but still think it should be left up the states to decide (It's the consitutionalist part of my political views acting up--state powers).

I agree with BlackRose--sometimes it's just prudent to keep things to yourself. But from what I understand, this question was flat-out asked--which I don't think is fair.

I suppose I have no problem with people personally choosing to eat there/not eat there, but it does bug me when they expect everyone else to follow their suit. That's when you get into "thought police" territory.

I've been reviewing news articles and have discovered that this controversy goes back a couple of years. The president's latest comment is just more fuel to the fire.

For example, here's an article from 16 months ago: http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/columns/deb-peterson/article_650eb58a-4ad4-11e0-bea0-0017a4a78c22.html

And here's some information on Chick-fil-A's charity division: http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-how-much-money-chick-fil-a-gives-to-anti-gay-groups-2012-7

"Among Chick-fil-A's payments was $1,000 to Exodus, a group that until recently claimed it can "cure" people of homosexuality."

As a potential customer, it's nice to know where a portion of your money is going when you make a purchase at Chick-fil-A.

That being said, I support personal choice...

Great job on those articles. I didn't bother to do much research, because I really couldn't care less about what a private company does with its money. I figure it it really bothers you what companies do with your money you have to be willing to accept the other foot--people not liking companies because they support things YOU support.

That's only fair. Honestly, I think that most people view the majority of companies as neutral until an issue like this crops up. That's why most business owners keep controversial opinions to themselves.

On the other hand, if businesses were more open about their intentions, and more people cared what they spent their customers' money on, then perhaps they'd self-regulate better, and government would be less inclined to interfere.

Much agreement. I may not care what companies do with their money, but I am impressed when it is spent on something I like. If that makes any sense.

I don't eat there in the first place, so I'm continuing not to eat there.

I do feel bad for the franchise owners, like someone said above because it's something they may not share the same opinion of. I know there is a Chick-Fil-A in the Northeast that isn't in agreement with the creator's statement.

I don't mind the opinion, I disagree with it wholeheartedly but I can see why people won't eat there now, especially when Chick-Fil-A donates money to anti-LGBT institutions. People don't want their money to go to those kind of proceeds if they don't support it.
