A trailer is now out for Chris Sanders' latest project. He was actually working on The Croods shortly before he was interrupted by HTTYD, so it's been in production for about five years. The Croods trailer Looks decent. |

Odd, this movie seems to be gettin' alot more publicity than Dreamworks other movie, Rise of the Guardians, despite the fact that Guardians comes out sooner (next month) and, in my personal opinion, looks a whole lot more epic than Croods (no offense). (Um, I hope it's okay if I post a Rise of the Guardians trailer here? Just for comparison?) Rise of the Guardians References to Brave and Journey 2, maybe, but I definitely see a host of references to James Cameron's Avatar and Ice Age. The Croods looks okay, but its message lacks any kinda subtlety (they basically come right out and tell ya the theme of "it's okay to be curious and different and try new things" right in the first few minutes of the film and the trailer) or deeply emotional plot like HTTYD did. It's definitely aimed more at "kiddy-humor". |

It's just being talked about a lot because this trailer is the first thing that most people have seen. I'm admittedly a little biased because I'm a fan of Chris Sanders' directing and art style (and you can really see his influence in some of the creatures in Croods). ROTG has been getting its fair share of hype since the second trailer came out in July. The hype has settled a little bit now. I wasn't blown away by The Croods trailer, but HTTYD's trailers weren't good either, so you can't judge the film by the trailer. Edited by Night Fury, Oct 6 2012, 11:02 PM.

The visuals look beautiful but I think it’s too early to judge the story by just one little trailer. I know from HTTYD that trailers (especially for animated movies) can be very misleading. However, since Chris Sanders is directing I am very excited to see it. By the way, the score for The Croods will be created by Alan Silvestri (Chris Sanders’ favourite composer). |

@Night Fury-- I've been looking forward to this movie, too, because it is a Sanders film. The trailer looks promising, but it still reveals very little about what the film will entail. Sanders generlly has some interesting character development and interaction in his movies, as well as some focus on interesting landscapes and creatures. I do like that the Croods, overall, look more like Neanderthal humans than Cro Magnons. That had me curious since Neanderthals are now believed to be far more intelligent and innovative than we first realized. The young Red-head female narrator, especially, resembles some simulations people have done of Neanderthals based on evidence that they were among the first humanoids who had red hair. They just happened to have chosen a teenage girl and a middle aged woman as their models. ![]() ![]() We also now know that Neanderthals were not our direct ancestors but a separate evolutionary branch who coexisted for a time with Cro Magnon (modern) humans, who were taller and more fine built than the Croods seem to be. There may have been some instances where the two hominids did have children together and shared their cultures, so we may have a tiny little bit of Neanderthal heritage in us. I think what most intrigued me as a Sanders device was the story at the beginning the patriarch tells about never leaving the cave (using the example of a young, she- bear) while the young, teenage woman character hisses in aggravation about it, quietly disagreeing with him. That difference in thought seems to be what sets the plot in action. Two things I like so far are : 1) How the Croods are depicted as dirty and hair-matted as those photos I showed-- it shows a sense of realism so difference from the usual CGI which is pristine and unnatural looking- kind of how the Berk Vikings were shown as being gritty and grimy in the film and 2) the way it focuses on an entire family and their interactions, not on teen rebels confronting everyone else (like so many movies show) I look forward to future trailers to find out more about the movie. @Walter-- I like Silvestri's stuff, too. He did nice work with Forest Gump , Contact and Beowulf Edited by Fjord Mustang, Oct 7 2012, 09:39 PM.

Thanks for the trailer, Walter! I did see it posted on the Deviant Art Dreamworks group. It did kind of put me off, to be honest. There was so much focus on slapstick humor and the cute teen male character who joins the migrating family a.k.a. Guy. I was disappointed the studio marketers would focus on slapstick. Chris Sanders' stuff deserves better than that. I have a hope that the first trailer is more in spirit of the actual movie. |
