I really love the visuals. This trailer also gives a slightly better idea of the story, but I just wish they would have focused more on that instead of the lame jokes. I will try to keep faith though, because Chris Sanders has never let me down yet. |

Chris Sanders stated on Deviantart several weeks ago that the trailers focus rather on humor than on depth so I wouldn't be worried about the final movie. I am sure Chris knows what he is doing. It's a general issue that trailers for animated movies are somehow incabable of capturing the real spirit of the movie. Edited by Walter Roehrich, Dec 10 2012, 02:55 PM.

Opened wide today. Currently at 64% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (69% from top critics). I'd hoped for a better reception. My local paper gave a pretty positive review, praising the story for it's relevancy even in modern times. I noticed the toys are at McDonald's so hopefully that will give the Box Office a boost. Hopefully Dreamworks can score a modest hit despite the lukewarm reception. |

I saw the Croods a few days ago and I have to say that the trailers do give a right impression on the movie because it is actually very slapstick oriented. The story itself isn’t special or surprising but it is enough to care for all the characters in the movie. The visuals / landscapes on the other hand were one of the best I have seen in recent animated movies and the action sequences were well done, too. Like all dreamworks movies it also makes very good use of 3D. It’s definitely not Chris’ best work so far but it is worth watching just for the visuals alone. I Don't Really Look Like This. Usually.

Seems the movie was released in parts of Europe before North America. I saw it today. I was annoyed by the rather weak critical response, but I am really glad I saw it. It was actually very enjoyable, if you go in seeing it as a movie more on the comedic and emotional vibe of Who Framed Roger Rabbit rather than How to Train Your Dragon . I liked Who Framed Roger Rabbit a lot, and this movie evoked that spirit. But I would not say it is as emotionally engaging as HTTYD or parts of Rise of the Guardians . This movie was made by two directors. I like to think the slapstick and the very brilliant action scenes come from Kirk DeMicco, and the more crazy-creative and emotional moments come from Chris Sanders. I could see Chris Sanders' style in this movie in the character development scenes, the family bonding scenes (the idea that a family is made of people from different personalities and styles who find meaning and survival in working as a unit against adversity), and the amazing wild animals that populate their world. Oh, and his view of female characters. I LOVE that Chris Sanders likes showing women as actually looking like women instead of Disney princess fashion models. This movie let him really show the curvy, sensual and strong-willed women who are his forte. It was rather neat the the Croods family was mostly female, and he did a nice job of showing women at all ages from baby to old woman. They aren't perfect, but they are beautiful somehow. Eep is really beautiful, I think. She's totally the anti Disney princess being stocky, sloping forehead, shaggy hair and covered in scars, but she has her own wonderful style. The surprise is her mother, Ugga. You have to see the movie to see what I mean, but she is the quiet spouse who lets her inner beauty shine out through the course of the journey. I liked also that the cavemen were really primal. They were covered in dirt, scars, matted hair... and they acted very animalistic sometimes. Most CGI is really showing characters as perfect-- these ones were primitive, and it was great to see them that way. I didn't like the slapstick overall, but most of the audience seemed to, being mostly kids and parents. I'd say this movie is closer to Sanders' Lilo and Stitch than HTTYD, but it's worth watching. The world building, the animation, the sense of danger and death and the character arcs of Grugg and Eep, Ugga and Guy are well done. I hope this film does well, since I want Dreamworks to keep making more edgy movies like this and less of the Madagascar and Shrek movies. I just wish the audience out there appreciated the way Dreamworks tries different things from the usual Disney fairy tale model. P.S.-- Chunky the Macawnivore is awesome Edited by Fjord Mustang, Mar 23 2013, 10:47 PM.

I still haven't seen it, but I am happy to see that it's becoming a major hit for Dreamworks. This will be their biggest original film since HTTYD. Should earn close to 200m domestically and well over 500m worldwide. |
