This is what I will miss. Cupcakes, you were so generically tasty and made for good snacks.

I never really ate Hostess. Foods like that were rarely ever in our house growing up and as an "adult"... um, with a degree in food and nutrition... I never buy it. But my thoughts are with all the people who are losing their job over it.

I Don't Really Look Like This. Usually.

Yeh, I agree. It seemed a really thorny situation, especially for the workers from the unions. I was reading about it yesterday and it seemed a tangle of business mismanagement and union policies (and I hope those workers will be compensated somehow). One thing I didn't realize was the company actually made more bread products rather than snack cakes, the cakes have such huge brand recognition that is what people know most.

The company management mentioned they would sell their brands, so there is a possibility those cupcakes will still get made, along with the Twinkies and other stuff, but under a different company. So, Backroads, those cupcakes might still get made. Still, the workers-- I feel bad about that.

Truth be told, we didn't have much of those snack cakes growing up. They were not healthy, but they also were (and still are) very expensive- we'd only get them from outlet stores every once in a long while. They were a treat, but the home-made versions we baked were much better and with real cream, even if they looked like something from a Tim Burton movie. When I tried Hostess stuff as an adult, I couldn't stand how sweet and chemically they tasted, so I don't eat them.

I did read one statement in a New York times article that one factor affecting snack cake companies in general is the changing American perception of junk food. Though there is always that loyal market who eats (urp) deep fried Twinkies, people are more aware that they aren't nutritional. Healthier alternatives have appeared in stores. I also think as Americans traveled and started being exposed more and more to other country's styles of bread, coffee, beer, cheese, baked goods, etc- they started wanting things that tasted less processed- so you see more variety and quality. (Ironically, Wonderbread did start to put real milk in its bread to make it more healthy, and they immediately got criticized by people who were allergiv to dairy products.)

I did find several recipes on the Internet that might provide culinary inspiration, like this one and a healthier version
