Hi to all,

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is hosting an exhibition on the countries of the Norse region.

Here is the website.

If anyone is in the DC area from February 19 to March 17, this is definitely something that should be checked out.

Here is a brochure showing all of the exhibits

Best,
EWO

I Don't Really Look Like This. Usually.

Thanks for sharing this! I'm glad to see events like this out there since there are so awesome artists who come from this region. They really blend well together the traditional folk art and folk lore with a modern touch.

I hope you check it out.

Two of my favorites who will be playing there are Eivor Palsdottir from the Faroe Islands and Nanook from Greenland.

Eivor does interesting modern takes on traditional songs from her islands. Here she is performing a song she wrote in honor of her island home, but she did it in the Viking and Medieval style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0k8WD1gx8mg

and here she is singing an Icelandic Christian hymn believed to be the oldest hymn from Scandinavia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP_Iee-D4U4 The words were written by the Icelandic chieftain and poet Kolbeinn Tumason, shortly before he was killed in a battle, around the late 12th century. The melody dates back to the 19th century. If you can get the translation in English, it's beautiful. It's the words of an older man knowing his life is coming to an end, but accepting and grateful for the life he's led.

And Nanook are artists from Greenland. They remind me a lot of Sigur Ros in their style. They sing in Greenlandic with a blend of Greenlandic instruments and musical styles and modern ambient music. The Greenland tourism board now feature their music in their commercials. I love it because it's the first time Greenland really is focusing on their unique people and lifestyle. Before they downplayed their blend of Inuit and Danish culture and focused solely on the nature of Greenland. BUt the people are always interesting, since they are a part of nature: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egsX0sjhqIE

This commercial was played at a tourism even I attended in Iceland, and people applauded. A few were tearing up at it because of its simple and honest message about Greenland.

WARNING! Severe Youtube time warp approaching! Multiple hours may be misplaced!

Wow, Fjord. That first one, Faroe Islands My Mother, absolutely captivated me! Two people, two instruments and two voices that ring vibrantly even through a rather distorted recording. I absolutely love her hand drum. It reminds me of the ones used by the Alaskan Inuit in the only movie I've ever seen that seriously addressed those people: "Never cry wolf." What are those drums called, do you know? It amazes me how versatile an instrument it is and how deep it can sound.

And the woman; what a voice! She reminds me a little of Kate Bush when she vocalizes, but her singing is something else entirely. I've already spent a half hour chasing her songs over Youtube and will be looking for more as the night wears on.

I can hear the resemblance between Nanook and Sigur Ros, too. I have a 3 hour playlist of Sigur Ros I listen to while I'm writing HTTYD chapters and love their sound so I'll be hunting for more Nanook when I can get time.

Thank you for these links. I'm always happy to be exposed to music like this.

The Kennedy Center has an archive of all of the Nordic Cool 2013 performances.

This is Nanook.

Here is Eivor, one of three events I was able to attend.

This is the first show Ochie and I attended. Iceland Airwaves: FM Belfast, Retro Stefson, and Sóley

All in all the entire exhibit was an enjoyable experience.
It's not everyday that the entire Kennedy Center is lit with the Northern Lights on its exterior.

Enjoy.
