Dreamworks is teaming up Netflix to create a new series based on their upcoming movie, "Turbo". News They must have some real confidence in it, to agree to a series even before the movie has premiered and the box-office results are in. 'Specially considerin' that they just announced they'd maybe cut up to a quarter of their workforce. Hopefully this will provide some revenue stream (though to be honest, the premise of the movie, I personally think, doesn't seem like Dreamworks' best, and I wonder how they can create a series outta it...but then again, I haven't seen it yet, so...) I don't really know what to think of this. I can see why you would turn "Kung Fu Panda", "Madagascar" and "How to train your dragon" into a series, as they are very popular franchises, but this? I just don't see the potential, both in quality and revenue for Dreamworks... Like you said, especially announcing this before the movie even came out seems like a courageous move to me, and not a particularly smart one at that. On the other hand, there already is an awful trend of turning every single big movie out there into a video game, in which I don't see the point either, so this might just be a new gimmick to get more money out of anything. So maybe, one day we'll get The Hobbit: The animated series or something. Who knows. |

Actually, there was an animated series version of the Hobbit long before the live-action movies came out (though it was an adaptation of the book and not an independent spin-off series with original material). It used to show on PBS, actually.

Turbo seems more geared towards younger audiences than most Dreamworks films, so maybe they have reason to be optimistic. Those films are virtually critic-proof anyway. A similar film by the name of "Cars" was very popular with young children and spawned multiple offshoots, despite being widely regarded as the worst Pixar has to offer. I'm not surprised to see them diversifying their business model, and trying to be more like Disney. I heard that Dreamworks is also developing a theme park somewhere in Asia, and another in the US. |

The one in the US is at a mall in New Jersey. News This was another decision I question, as this particular mega-mall concept has been derided as bein' one of the ugliest in the world, and has had multiple financial problems. I guess they must've offered Dreamworks an awfully good incentive to set up there. Personally, I'd prefer that they have their own dedicated park, like Disney or Universal, but I guess they still don't think they have the finances to back that kind of endeavor yet. It'd be nice if this was just a first step in that direction in that direction though. At one point, back in 2008, they DID announce that they were building their own theme park in Dubai (complete with concept art of artificial snow-topped mountains and gondola rides inside a massive dome). But nothing's been heard on that front since. They do have several Dreamworks-themed rides for "Shrek" and "Madagascar" at Universal Studios in Singapore though. |
