I, too, would be interesed in a simple distillery as many herbs and flowers have medicinal and healthful properties, but often need to go through a distilation process. Also, distilled water is a recommendation for many homeopathic remedies to be mixed with plants, etc., so I think it would be great information. Well, and the idea of moonshine isn't bad either!

I think that I will try transplanting some cattails into my pond. Not sure how to keep them from taking over but I have geese, cows and soon, pigs in that area so I am sure that they will help keep them under control. They will also be a great food/fiber source. |

I haven't tried them, but people "wild-eaters" use cattails in salads as they are suppose to taste like cucumbers. I tried to plant cattail seeds with no success but would like to find some to transplant in wet spots. I guess duck weed is a good source of protein too so they 2 would make a nice little water pond item. The thing about harvesting cattails in a meaningful quantity is there is nothing designed to harvest in wet swampy areas but I have been penciling down a few designs as a "production" method which looks like a buck saw in front of a jet-sled and the buck saw gets worked in front and drops the cattails into the jet-sled....just a thought as I haven't got a buck saw. |

Your harvesting idea sounds like it should work well. You can find Bucksaws at auctions fairly cheap. I will add it to my "someone was looking for this" list. Cattails are very easy to transplant. Birds do it for you if you have the time. They will take over though. Just go to a ditch that has some growing and dig them up. I planted some in my Dad's pond cause I thought they were neat....he is STILL thanking me

Thanks, HF. That's probably the first thing I've read that didn't believe all vehicle's would be damaged to the point they would not be able to run. That has caused me a lot of concern as my BOL is a bit of a distance from where I live. I had developed a plan to get there by walking (several days worth), but it sure would be better (safer) if I could drive my 4x4 truck!! |

That is a different take on emp's that I've ever read too. Find it pretty sad that a faulty traffic light can cause the chaos that they predict. Are today's people THAT STUPID? Kind of scary about what the lack of gasoline alone can do to modern life. |

Yeah, an emp would be one thing. An x-class solar flare lasting for minutes might be a whole different situ. Personally, with the increase in solar flares frequency, I would be more concerned about that than the emp. Still good to know, some electronics would still be ok as I was thinking we would need all hardened vehicles. |

Its true, Grizzly, and very sad, but yes, people ARE that stupid! And much like a multi-car pile up, stupidity seems to have a chain reaction, as well. In any case, it won't be pretty. But, I have an idea that if a person waited a bit for the initial panic to calm a bit, you should be able to drive most anywhere you'd want to go (provided you had gas) if you could avoid the larger cities and stick to the country roads. Well, at least that's what I'm hoping for!! |

I've seen how foolish people can be in traffic just in Rochester during road construction when the traffic light is down and there is a four way stop sign. Didn't these people have drivers training or don't they have that class any more? Hate to see if there was a disaster and panic. |
