We bought an electric chain saw for my use since I cut up branches for the grill and starting fires. The teeth need near perfect balance or the thing goes off the guide. Something I need to work on since when it works, it is pretty slick. . .if you don't mind dragging the power cord around. If I had it to do over, I'd get the biggest hp available but even the cordless are handy. |

I used to have a small elec. chain saw. I really liked it and felt quite safe using it because, as you pointed out, as soon as you let the trigger go, it stops immeidately, unlike a regular one that will spin for a bit. It worked great on the smaller stuff that I usrd it for, but for felling trees, etc., I don't think it had enough power. My lumberjack brother used to call it my "dremel saw"!!! LOL |

Some links I ran across . . .more on Rocket Mass Heating: http://donkey32.proboards.com/index.cgi http://www.richsoil.com/rocket-stove...ter.jsp#hybridhttp://www.richsoil.com/rocket-stove...ter.jsp#hybrid They last one describes a chimney system to make present wood burners 2 twice as efficient. . . .which is only half the efficiency they are getting out of a full Rocket Mass Heating unit. We'll have CDs for DIY'ers available soon on our results for the Smoke Less Chimney as I think we get a little better than twice the heat from the chimney unit...and it took a year to figure out the tricks to it. |

Check out one of the things I want to do with a jetstove: http://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/forums/viewthread/80728/ ...in a nutshell, CONCRETE MASS Heat. Some of these are 79% efficient. I think a jetstove could get 90% efficient...another project on the list of to-do. |

Make sure that when you cut you are very VERY careful. A friend of ours (age 60) has been a logger since high school. He would notch all of his trees and then tip them after they were cut. Last week with the wind, all of his trees were notched and when his back was turned, ear protection on, saw running, notching another tree, the tree behind him fell in a gust of wind and he died. He had done this for years and had great experience and though I am sure that he knew what he was doing, he is dead. People become complacent (sp?) when doing something that they are used to doing. Chaps should be on everyones list, maybe a hard hat (Griz do you hear your name being whispered here???) And never use power saws when you are alone. |

No saws when your alone? I can't remember the last time I cut wood with anyone along. Most don't find it to be a good time or any fun at all, only a certain few. Just take your time and be carefull. Usually dropping trees in the woods is the scary part. Always look around for any dead branches near by that could come down on top of you as the tree is falling. Once again, don't get in a hurry cause that's when accidents happen. |

My brother was a very talented lumberjack and for all his caution, he had a "widow maker" come crashing down on him - it broke his shoulder blade bone and his collar bone - he was laid up for a very long time. The "widow" actually fell from a tree that was near the one he was working on and fell almost a full 5 minutes AFTER he had felled his tree. So, yeah, be careful and, as Grizzly says, take your time. |

I should amend that to, if you go out alone, make sure that you tell someone where you are cutting and about what time you will be back. Hows that Griz??? |

Yeap, that's what we do if hubby is going alone into woods. He's had a few close calls and I always remind him my cousin died at an early age logging. My cousin cut into a tree that blew up...he hit an ice pocket which can happen with maples, but other trees too. A splitter threw the neck and it was over. Chaps give ya a fighting chance if the chain drops out of control but can add a lot of weight. Yeap to the take your time. Don't overwork it and think before you cut-even a downed tree can roll when getting bucked. Most trees can be cut up in 4 hours work, so take 10 to do it. |

I got some chaps for Christmas a couple years back, haven't wore them yet, don't want to get them dirty. Quite a few years ago, when I picked up a new chainsaw, I asked the shop owner about chaps and he told me " the funny thing about them is, no one buys them till after they get hurt!" Seems like that's a commen practice with many saftey items. |
