Yes, it could happen any day and if someone did use a machete there would still be people bitching about guns.

Ya know, it might be that the American people should try to put it all in perspective. What I mean is; yeah, we had a horrible tragedy from an assassin with a gun, but if we lived in a country where guns were outlawed, there's a very real possibility that the same man, at the same time, with the same intent, would have used a car bomb. In that scenario, the loss of life would have been much higher and damage to property, injury to many more, etc. BUT - none of the "ingredients" to make that happen would have been the object of a mass hysterical crack-down and calls for stricter cell phone laws, or banning possession of electrical wire, now would they? I am in no way trying to minimize the awfulness of what happened in AZ, but just asking people to do the smart thing - blame the guy, not the gun!

I think that the entire debate is deflective. Instead of asking why did did it (other than the surface reasons) they are spotlighting the "how". I wonder if the reason might be that the people are getting so frustrated about the government not listening to them in any real way. I believe that people are tired of being patronized and patted on the head and hearing, "I understand what you are saying but I really just don't give a damn". When frustration takes hold the mentally unbalanced or the "fringe" elements react in ways that can be violent. If the focus was on that instead of the fact that it was a gunman, I don't think that the entire argument would be the same, but that would require the government to take stock in what they are doing to cause this frustration and to admit some blame. Instead this way they are the "targets" and victims. The spin works when the uneducated masses can't/won't think for themselves.

I agree Raven, people that feel ignored very often will do whatever they can think of to be heard. In this case though, I wonder if the killer didn't have a personal hatred of the congreswoman - perhaps she snubbed him at a public forum by not answering a question or her office wouldn't take a phone call. This just feels more personal than a political assassination. After all, she is only a congresswoman - it isn't like she holds any real power and taking her out wouldn't bring this nation to its knees. I also wondered when the news first broke if she was the intended target - remember, a Federal judge was also killed. I keep hearing more and more news about the congresswoman's condition but the press seems strangly silent on the killer.

I also noticed that very little, if any, information was given about the other people that were killed. As if they weren't important enough to talk about. Kind of tells me that if your not part of the government family, your meaningless.

It is called "collateral damage", Griz, unimportant people that unfortunately get hurt in the process but they are considered acceptable losses.
I read some of my more obscure websites and several people that used to be his friend before he started going nuts said that the congresswoman upset him by not listening to the people (him in particular) at a meet and greet with the constituents. I guess the conversation got a little heated and she would not be swayed by their opinion. He then started sending a series of letters of complaint to her office and received what I guess amounted to a form letter. His former friends said that it was about that time that he really lost his grip on reality. I am not sure which website I found it on but it may have been the Savage Nation. If I run across it again, I will post it here. It may or may not be true, as both the conservative and main stream media all have an agenda and I don't believe that either of them speak the whole truth. You never know but I consider it a plausable explaination as it make sense. If you piss off a bunch of people, ignore their pleas, not take responsibility for your actions all the while telling people that they are not doing enough for a collective whole that the pissed off people don't believe in anyway, hand the people that you didn't listen to the bill for your folly and go about your business while patting them on the head telling them that they just don't understand what is going on, pretending to be open and middle of the road you will find a frustrated nut with a gun that doesn't feel he has anywhere else to turn. The more people wake up to what is going on, the more and more "nuts" will come out of the woodwork.

Thanks for the information, Raven - I suspected there was some underlying cause of the attack, but it isn't something that is being widely publicized. However, I always, always, always believe when stuff like this happens that it is NOT random. I would also have considered seriously that the Federal Judge was the target and the congresswoman was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. But, that all does make sense, now. But, I can perfectly understand the shooter's perspective here, not that I would take it to his "resolution", but absolutely appreciate the set of facts that took him there. Here you have a soccer-mom type that has never HAD to work a day in her life for the purpose of feeding herself - any employment she's held was simply some "to get out of the house and do good works" happy-ass crap, and paying taxes was never a struggle cuz hubby's high end job took care of that unpleasant little inconvenience. For her to assume that she has any clue as to how the ordinary word-a-day people she supposedly represents are affected by any of her actions is quite ludicrous. She HAS no clue, has no way to get one, and most likely is quite convinced she does not need one to do "what's best" for the people she represents. The whole system is fatally flawed. In order to hold a public office, I believe a persom must first have been gainfully employed for a good number of years, have had to pay the same crushing taxes that they believe are fair for everyone else and, once they qualify to serve in a public office, do it with a minimal expense-covering only salary. These career politicians make me crazy. I still do feel bad about the congresswoman, but maybe if a message gets sent out that you cannot ignore your consituents, even if you believe them to be insane, other politicians will take heed.

You have stated exactly how I feel about it. The problem is that the real message will never get out because anyone with any balls will have an editor who IF he publishes it at all will bury it in some back page of the legal section between some foreclosure and the probate listings, and the news that the guy who did it is a nut. Further deflection comes with the debate as to how to punish all gun owners for pointing out that the guy did it not the inanimate object that he held.
I full agree that all elected officials should have held a "real" job, including the organizer in chief and the tax dodging mob that he hired on to strong arm the people he "represents".

This sort of thing is probably only a few months and layoffs from becoming common place. Much like the wave of school shootings after the first one occured. I read an article recently (about the school board shooter a month ago) titled "When Americans lose everything, they lose it". Very true. Much like cornering a weasil in the garage to catch him and throw him outside. That weasil's survival instinct is going to kick into overdrive, and with some help from the bad luck fairy :( this weasil will leave life lessons all over your neck and forarms... trust me. The father of this little girl killed in Touscan made a press release saying he hoped his daughters death wouldn't be used as an excuse to further poloticians unconstitutional ideas. Pretty sad that we are to the point in this country where a father in mourning already realizes how this ordeal will be spun.
(In somewhat unrelated news) Spokane Washington is a hotbed of racial tensions with the Arian Nation headquarters only a few miles away. The MLK parade had to be rerouted after a suspitious backpack was found that turned out to be holding an explosive device. OK, the kicker here was, attention was drawn to it because of all the wires hanging out of it. So the white supremisists may not be the brightest bunch out there but I'm sure in Day 1 of "racially motivated explosives 101" they cover tucking the wires into the backpack.... I hear another agenda being furthered here.
It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.

Yeah, I guess that's the truly sad thing, even when something is obviously a devious attempt to cause a problem for someone, the idiots in the press still suck it up spit it back out as a "real scoop"! Much like what is going on with Planned Parenthood right now. Apparently the group Live America (or somesuch anti abortion group) has gone to PP clinics and, under the guise of a gov't official conducting an investigation into human trafficing, has been asking to see files, etc. The people at PP have asked the FBI to investigate as they believe there is an infiltration attempt going on. But, I am SURE the press won't see it that way when the Live group releases its crap - it will be BIG NEWS!!
