I asked my father-in-law about growing tobacco. He said his neighbor planted it and it turned out pretty good. That's where he got the seeds but it was two years after he tried them and they didn't even start. Maybe too old? Any way he said the neighbor's plants turned out really nice, they started them in a greenhouse but then didn't know how to properly dry them. they hung them from the rafters and when dry, crumpled them up. He mixed it with boughten tobacco and it smoked fine. He said they just weren't sure of the prep for drying process.

I had an uncle that lived in WI that used to grow some specialty tobacco every year (no, I don't mean THAT kind!). He started it in little peat pots in the house and then it outside when it was warm enough. He grew it for pipe tobacco. I believe he shredded it somehow and then soaked it in brandy (could have been whiskey - I just remember that standing near the vat would make your eyes water!). He smoked a pipe in the evening while reading his paper and the smell was wonderful.

I tried to start my Dad's seeds and had total failure but read about what to do with it. It was recommended that after harvest, you soak it in either whiskey or moonshine and then hang it upside down until dry. They made tobacco shredders but I think that you could use a herb mill in small amounts. It would be a great barter item if you can figure out how to do it though. I, too, love the smell of a good pipe. My Dad smokes one and I always think of him when I smell a pipe.

I just started trying to germinate the tobacco seeds. It's been a couple of days so far. I'll keep you posted on progress.

Someone my father-in-law knows was searching the internet for deals on bulk tobacco. He finally found an out of state supplier for a fair price so he ordered it. It arrived and he was happy with the deal and all was good. Then one day he got a letter from the state claiming that he owed them sales tax on this purchase that he made. He did some further research and found that they were right! He had to send them the tax money! His deal was no longer so good. Just another example of our money leeching government.

Speaking of which, I just planted my germinated tobacco seeds last night. After doing some research, I was growing skeptical of the seeds ever germanating because alot of people were complaining about their seeds being duds. But Sunday was the magic day for mine, as over half of them popped.
