The two year life on gas is right. I wouldn't go any longer. Even at that time you can smell the difference. I wounder if there is some sort of testing device or chemicals to test your own fuel just to know when to give up on it. The horse plan is nothing to laugh at. We have many Amish not far from here and I'll bet if something bad should happen, they would almost not be affected.

The Amish couldn't get their cell phones to work and their social security checks would be late...and they couldn't get rides from people to the grocery stores. The young couldn't ride around in their buggies to drink and harrass people either...they'd be effected just not as much.

Now there's a new side to them that I've never thought of, Raven! LOL And, here I always think of them as such nice young people and how sweet and quaint it is to see them tooling around in their buggies!! Oh, too funny! I guess teenagers are what they are, no matter who they belong to!!

They are a tourist attraction and not much else. You have you good ones but most of them, adults included, think that the "English" are nothing but suckers for paying extra for anything Amish made. I have met some of them that I wouldn't mind having for neighbors but the majority of them are not what they appear.

As far as the septic tank height, 54" is the maximum (that he builds anyway). A bit compact to hide out in for a long period of time, but really, if your hiding in a septic tank, long term is likely not the goal.

I don't personally know any Amish, but I deal with a Menonite community fairly often for work. They seem like a very upstanding crowd. They are quite self sufficient themselves. They seem similar to Amish but with power, vehicles and a love for snowmobiles.

A friend of mine has a lot of Mennonite neighbors and she isn't all that impressed with them but I believe that like the Amish and the English, there are good and bad

Your septic tank wouldn't be much for a hide out, unless an emergency, but they would be great for a storage unit and also could be completely conceiled quite easily. I would coat the outside with a foundation water sealer though cause moisture will go through cement after a while. Wouldn't hurt to put some type of drainage around it like setting it on sand or gravel. You'd hate to have it packed with food and supplies and find it half full of water.

I agree, and the tanks that we can get for cost are cracked, so some type of coating would be mandatory.

There is a good article on OPSEC at http://thesurvivalistblog.net Also check out the responses and on one of them there are some utube videos of the twilight zone called "The Shelter" It really shows what people turn into in stressfull times.

We've talked about that very topic before and come to about the same conclusion - the less people know, the better off YOU are. Sad, but true! I had to laugh about the person's comment that said she thought they were "safe" cuz they lived about 40 miles from her non-prepping family. 40 miles? C'mon, a desperate person could walk that distance uphill all the way, in a driving blizzard, barefoot, with a broken leg and pulling a wagon with a flat tire! It seemed that the general consensus was that people should quietly prep for their loved ones, even though they may not be "on board" with it. I would love to know how anybody can afford to do that! But, I do strongly agree with the original article that basically says if you value YOUR survival, keep your prepping under wraps, even from those you feel close to. Again, so very sad, but so very necessary.
