I splurged and got the dietz lanterns that could be used for heating water on the top too. They were the small ones and I keep them in the camper.

As for lighting, I haven't figured out why people are not using solar lights. I like them far better than oil burning for light, they are easy to use. I keep some in south facing windows so they are charge when needed and one is the big spot-light unit that will light up an area like a car headlight. In a SHTF situ, I would think even kero could be hard to come by. Wood is, of course the main source of cooking and heat which could get scarce here if we don't find some good buck saws as backup.......just my thinking.

I have never tried solar powered lights - but it makes sense that would be ideal, as long as a lot of ancillary items were not needed to keep them going. But, I imagine that a person could just stockpile those items just like everything else! :)

Guess what Griz, Missouri has computers too! All of my critters had better have their brains intact when I get home :-)
Stanley doesn't have a brain so I know that he is safe :D

LOL Uh-oh - Grizzly, looks like you're busted! So, Raven, are you learning a lot? Do you think it was worth the money and time? Maybe you can share some of what you learn with us - as time allows. :)

I was looking at those dietz cook top lanterns. Thought they were a pretty neat idea. I've been collecting dietz lanterns for quite some time. When ever I brought some home from an auction or flea market, I would completely go through them, clean, repaint if needed, replace wicks, ect. so they are all ready for use. We have also stock piled lamp oil and kerosene. I haven't checked out much for solar lighting. We did pick up some little sidewalk solar lights. If you get the right kind that runs on AA batteries, you can disconnect the light and they will work as a mini battery charger, the cheapest solar charger you will find.

Well, can someone fill me in? What is Raven in Missery for? SHTF training?

Griz, that is a great idea to use solar lights to charge AA batteries. The system is small and light enough to be in the BOB and use for lighting if needed. The battery might also come in handy to charge communications and other stuff.

That is a good idea about charging batteries. So, you just take the wiring off the light element and you're good to go? I guess I've never taken one apart so don't know what all it would entail. Seems like it would be fairly simple, though.

Yes, that's all there is to it. I read about it quite a while ago and the only reason to eliminate the light is so you don't start wearing down the battery. They aren't the easiest to take apart cause they weren't ment to but not real hard. They usually go on sale this time of year so for less than $5. you can experiment.
