I thought that as long as we have been talking about flooding etc I thought that I would bring up a simple trick. If there is excess moisture there is rust. I have been keeping my canning jars in the basement on shelves and sure as the sun rises they get rust. You can't trust the contents that have the lids to rusty. To counter this I cover the lid and the edges of the lid with a very thin layer of vaseline. I thought that I would pass this on because I talked to someone today that has canned forever didn't know this...I thought that it was common knowledge.

Add vaseline to your preps...lard doesn't work here as the mice like the lard but not the vaseline. They chew on the wax too. I buy the huge jars for $1 at the dollar store.

Good to remember! Hate to see all that hard work and ingredients of canning something end up not usable. I have read both that a person should leave the rings on filled jars and that you should take them off. I would think leaving them on would protect the seal better, but I can also see that leaving it on might encourage rust between the jar and the ring. What's your opinon?

I always remove them myself but I know others that leave them on. Mine last longer than theirs though.
