Well, folks, another Thanksgiving is upon us! Happy, happy to all!! Just took my pumpkin pies out of the oven and they smell wonderful!! I was thinking about prepping and how people would celebrate the various holidays after SHTF situ....bet things would drastically change, but I think people and their families would still gather and try to carry on traditions as best they could. For sure there would be a lot of "remember back when..." discussions. Hard to believe that someday people may look back to this time and think of it as "the good old days"!! Anyway, hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and does what makes them happy - Raven - you doin' turkey sandwiches this year, like you said last year that you'd rather do?? LOL

We ended up going to my mom and dads. Mom called to ask and I lied and gold her that I had to work...she said that it was only going to bc 4 other adults and my very quiet gôod nephew so I told her that IT would go. I am typing this on a nw tablet so it is taking me forever and it is full of errors, sorry about that.
At any rate I didn't have to cook...happy me!

Well Tuesday I processed a 3 year old hen. She was an old Cornish cross and weighed 15 lbs, the only one left of her generation and a few months ago I started looking at her with mouth watering.

She was just under 10 lbs dressed and when she hit the stewing pot she became tough as nails...skin and all. However, 20 hours of a low simmer and garlic, ginger, sea salt and sage, she started to melt into the best chicken I have ever had. It was just luck and good weather that I started a couple days early and got her done in time. I also got a couple lamb hides salted as my first attempt to tan hides.

So, she was a success and I have 12 more to process as needed from this year....mouth watering already.

Good luck with the hide tanning and let us know how it's going. I just remembered that I still have a few various hides in the shop freezer and should get to them. I'm going to try to make a hide tumbler out of an old clothes dryer drum.

Ummm...you tumble them? I was just going to do the stretching after they got good and dried from the salting. Then brush, shampoo a couple good times (they were FinnSheep so not a lot of lanolin) and dry good again.

I haven't tried tumbling yet but heard it works pretty good. When they dry, they get stiff as a board and pulling and stretching is a LOT of work.
I know this topic should be some where else so if we have any more info, we'll move to it.
