You can check records of previous years on the usgs sites.

Typically, we don't have earth rotational changing quakes (like the one in Chili) and 8-9'ers more than once every few years.

The "large ones" started on a near yearly basis in 2004.

There are theories floating around that the solar flares heat up the crust and mantle so about a week after a flare, more quakes occur. I haven't been able to look into it deeper but with all that energy streaming at the planet, you'd think something happens. If this theory holds water, then as the solar maximum peaks, so will quakes. The estimated solar peak is around Dec 2012/Jan 2013.

So, then the "peak" has already come and gone, right? As for what happens to the solar flares' energy, I think the majority of it is deflected by our atmosphere. True, some gets in and with the holes in the ozone, probably more does now that in years gone by, I am sure the effect would be intensified. But, I am not a scientist, so I just have to base my opinion on 1 part what I read, 1 part on other people's opinions and 2 parts my own common sense.

Nope, the peak(s) are yet to happen. I'm looking for a round of them this spring and NASA is predicting the peak Dec 2012 to early 2013....

As for what happens, a gvloanguy on YouTube has a video of the August 2011 event animated. In the event of a coronal mass ejection, read the book of revelations. A third of the earth is scorched.

Do you happen to have a link to that vid, HF? I'd like to check it out. But, as for the "peak" I was referring to the earthquakes, not solar disturbances. But, anyway, I would appreciate the link, if you have it. Thanks!

My iPad doesn't collect YouTube embedded links...Go figure.

Here is the link...
YouTube.com/watch?v=1Hkltt44Wjjk

If I didn't type it right...had to read from a main puter, search YouTube. "gvloanguy here's a visual on what happens to earths magnetic field after solar flares"

Try to enlarge it as you can better see the back side of the field (in red) and it explains the auroras seen all the way to AZ last August.

Oh, the quakes peak? No, they seem to come a week or so after the flares but I don't know if that's a regular part of the feature of solar flares or something that is happening because of something else...they just seem to coincide. I'll go look for the people who wrote the theory on that if you are interested.

By the way, the term scientist refers to anyone who is in the "study" of a subject. Anything is a science and anyone can be a scientist...just like anyone can be an artist or a philosopher ... =)
