I didn't try that, Raven. The texture of the stuff made me think that I'd just end up with flaky little hard crumbs and so I figured I'd give it a try as cooked cereal.

HF, I am not surprised that you can't buy unprocessed wild rice in the U.S. as it is VERY invasive but I am very surprised that you could buy and import it to the U.S. Which leads me to believe its another one of the ridiculous rules and regulations that are so easily gotten around they're not worth the ink it took to print them!

I can't wait to see how HF does with growing wild rice.

I am very interested in that, too. I believe its a pretty finicky plant and it has certain requirements to grow. But, if you do get it to grow, plan that it is the only thing that will grow in the pond. It can quickly take over and choke out everything else. But, you could still plant things like cat tails on the edge and if its too deep for the rice in the center, you could put in water lillies. I once heard that sunfish eat the rice after it falls in the water. I don't know if that's really true, or not, but if it is, you could even stock your pond with filets, um...I mean fish. :)

Wouldn't the geese move in to eat the rice? Is there any other way to control it besides chemicals of course?

Wild rice is actually an aquatic grass, so its like any other place you don't want grass to get ahead of you, like in your vegetable garden. As for the geese, I'm not sure. I do know that they have their set flyways and, if a group landed, it would probably be sort of accidental. But, I think you already have a lot of them that come to your area, don't you? If HF is contemplating a smallish plot of wild rice, she absolutely would want to keep them and wild ducks away from her pond. The rice is an annual and must re-seed itself every fall. So, if you have a flock that lands and eats it clean- you won't have any rice come up in the spring. A great deterent is to stretch out colorful rubber snakes on strategically placed sticks. We used to do that on my mother's dock and it did keep them off. Then of course there's the story of the bald eagle that decided to eat one!

Raven, do you and Grizzly like wild rice? If you do, I could certainly bring you down some the next time I come. I think its a lot cheaper up here. I normally buy the broken pieces - they're about half the price and I don't particularly care if the grains aren't full size; it doesn't affect the taste, quality or shelf life. But, if you'd prefer the unbroken stuff, just let me know. There are a couple locals that sell it around here. They charge a lot less than grocery store prices.

Been thinking I could grow a small amount of it on the creek area but after reading the while process - wild rice needs to get sunk right after it falls off the stalk to germinate. So any seed I found on ebay most likely will not germinate...but going to give it a go anyway.
You can lead an ass to knowledge, but you can not make it think.

You never know. The stuff is supposed to come back after a drought.
