Does anyone out there hunt Morels? I usually see a bunch of ads on Craigslist for them but as of yet I have seen only 1 in our area. I am hoping to get out there next week if there are any around. Just wondering if anyone else has found any. |

OMG!!! I LOVE morels! We have a few up here, but they are pretty scarce. When I lived in Iowa, we used to hunt them and would get just tons of them. We ate morels for a couple weeks at nearly every meal! Oh, I do miss that part of living in Iowa! I did try to freeze some one year, but it wasn't a real success. Maybe that's part of their attraction - only being a once a year treat. I hope you're able to find more, Raven - nothing is better than a few scrambled eggs with a side of butter-fried "shrooms"!! |

Hummmm. Never tried morels so now I feel I'm missing out. I did read in one of my mushroom books by stamen that if you burn an area morels have been picked- you get more morels. Also, I think people dry them as I have seen them on eBay. I have Plugged some logs with shitake and lions mane shrooms but that was 4 years ago and I just need to wait. |

They are simply sublime, HF! You gotta try them! Speaking of trying, how come its taking 4 years for 'shrooms to grow? I always thought that conditions were either favorable or not to grow them - nothing in between would work? Anyway, morels don't do well being frozen and they are basically a "pick 'em and eat 'em" proposition. I once tried making a cream of mushroom soup. It was okay, but, as morels lose a lot of their volume when cooked, and have a rather delicate flavor, it seemed like a waste of good ingredient. The best steak or chop topper in the whole world is to brown a bit of butter, add some morels, quickly saute them, (doesn't take long, they cook fast) and then, when they are almost done, add a splash or two of white wine and let it bubble with the browned butter to make a sauce. You can substitute bacon grease for the butter to give it a kind of smokey flavor. Ahhhh...its the best!! |

Thanks a lot MC, just got done with supper and now you made me hungry again! If we found a bunch, we could plan a cook out, but we have never found very many. |

Well, it would be a great idea, but I kind of suspect the little buggers are going to be scarcer this year than most other years. Just too weird of a spring and I know they're awfully particular about how and where they'll grow. Around here, they can be found near edges of deep woods where there has been clear cuts in the past and aspen have grown in. I'm not sure if fire is a factor (it sure is for blueberries, tho), but aspen seems to be key in this area. I know that isn't true for Iowa, where we'd find them just growing in the ditches. But, yeah, I get hungry just thinking about 'em! As you can probably tell, they're one of my fave things to eat! |

When you rinse your morels, save the water and spread it back on a favorable environment. The spores that are in the mushrooms will be spread back out over the area. The habitat doesn't last very long, just long enough for the tree to die off but when they are there they are incredible. I have never liked them frozen or dried though so I agree MC, a seasonal treat. |

Yes,HF. I've also heard to carry them in a netted sack like onion sack or similar. Supposed to spread something to grow more. All just legends as far as I know. |

I have a couple of Stamen's mushroom books and can look up it next time I have some free time...might be a while. Or, borrow the books. It makes sense to me that any way you can get the spores to reach soil you will get some shrooms when the conditions are right. |
