California is a great example of what is wrong with American thinking right now. Everybody wants their life to remain the same but at someone elses expense. The vast majority of the west imports water to irrigate their fields rather than use other measures or grow items that are better suited to that land and environment so you have neighbor fighting neighbor for water. California imports their fuel, field workers, and power but with diminishing national supplies and a growing entitlement minded population they continue their "gimme" tactics for their "fair" share of what is produced elsewhere. There is no way that this can end well. |

I listened to Howard Kunstsler's podcast a few weeks ago and he describe people waiting for a energy solution to "fit their lifestyle" and it's going to be the other way around -people will have a lifestyle according to how much energy they can access. He's the author of the "Long Emergency" and the rest of his books are lost time, but his podcasts are insightful as he goes through cities and towns to describe how they can either adapt or utilize what they have there. He divides the country into sections that survive the decline of energy into how they can (in the future) produce their energy locally. The thing about the decline in energy is that like the Texas fields, all fields tend to decline. They let the Texas oil fields rest for 20 years and they now produce about 75% of what they did in the 70s. It's waiting that 15-20 years that's the killer. |

Doesn't look good for the Golden State. I suppose we'll soon hear about rolling black-outs and brown-outs as they try to compensate for the electricity shortages. I read, a while back, too, that California is experiencing a real water crunch - much of the water used is piped in from the north and the Colorado River and they're having a hard time meeting demand. Don't remember where I read that, but it stuck with me as no surprise. HF, that article didn't mention the reason the nuke plant went off - do you know why? I aslo wonder why it seems to be a permanent shut-down - seems as if, absent a serious radiation problem, whatever ails it could be repaired, doesn't it? |

California has had rolling black/brown outs for the past year or so. They are not "new news" so I suppose that they don't talk about them much. I agree that people want to talk tough on energy conservation as long as they can still run everything by flipping a switch. I am currently reading a book by Joel Salatin called "Folks, This Aint Normal" or something along that line...it is his newest book. I like the way that he connects todays attitude with the failing agriculture system that we currently have. I was really suprised as to some of the connections he made but they make perfect sense. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Not as much "how to" as I had hoped but it is well worth the read. |

Thanks to Obama shutting down coal run power plants, someone told me that the coal plant in Rochester will be closing. That thing is huge and have no clue as to what they're planning on going to next. |

I see on the Drudge Report that there are several more California cities that are going bankrupt. |

With the huge percentage of illegal aliens and citizens on the dole, I am surprised the State of California itself hasn't gone belly up. I know its been close, a few times, but they've managed to pull a rabbit out of a hat and keep those checks and food stamps going out. Ya gotta wonder how long it will be until they no longer have the means or the ability to borrow the money to keep the machine going. Maybe "Nana Nancy" will dip into her own personal fortune to help "those less fortunate" as she seems to think its the duty of all Americans to support illegal aliens and those who refuse to work. Nah - I was just dreaming!!! LOL |

I won't be taking any California freshly printed cash any time soon. They are also low on the water bill there too. We used to sell a lot to that state as they were the 8th largest economy in the world. I think they are in the 20th range now. That's a fast drop in standard of living. re--Power Plants: A "new" power plant in Faribault was built and they couldn't afford to turn it on because it was suppose to be natural gas powered....and the price doubled. It's off 35 with a wind turbine sitting there also not doing anything. Guess we all make little mistakes!! So the gut I bought my propane generator from on eBay backed out on the deal. Bummin cause I really wanted a $900 genset for $300.... |
