I just thought that it would be a good time to remind everyone to get those canner gauges checked before they are stored....you never know when there will no longer be an opportunity to do it TEOTWAWKI...type stuff. At any rate, most counties no longer have the equipment to check the gauges so they have to be sent away. The address that was given to me is : National Presto Industrial Inc 3925 N Hastings Way Eau Claire WI 54703-3703 The do not want the whole canner, you have to take off the gauge and send that in. There is a charge but I am not sure how much it is...their number is 1-800-877-0441. |

Thanks for the reminder, Raven. It really is too bad the County Extension no longer has the funding to do that - however, they do have the funding to a whole lot of other, less useful, busy good works!! I have been thinking that I could go to an autobody shop or a welding shop and have them checked - after all, they have gauges that they have to maintain for their welders & torches. I'll check it out and let everyone know what I find out. I get nervous about sending out stuf - if it doesn't come back or gets damaged in transit, the whole canner is pretty useless until you buy a new, high-buck gauge for it. |

I just remembered that we talked about that before and I was going to ask at a welding supply shop. I was working in Iowa all summer and had no idea where to go there but I'm back in Rochester again so I'll try to stop by if I don't forget. That seems to be happening more all the time. In fact next weekends gun show is right across the street from it but I found out the hard way that they are not open on weekends so I'll try to stop in after work. |

LOL Grizzly, don't feel bad, some days I'd forget my elbows if they weren't attached! I tried to call some places yesterday and found the same thing - not open on weekends. But, if a person could find someone local that could check the gauges, that would be fantastic! |

I just got an email from that gauge checking site. They will only do Presto Canner gauges but they will do those for free (you do have to pay to ship the gauge to them). |

Another canning check I do each year is if I have jars of food that go bad, I use a stone to check to make sure the rim of the jar is smooth and not chipped. For some reason, this year I had 5 jar rims in need of smoothing to get a good seal. I usually just do acid tomatoes, pickles and such for canning so it's good to know the pressure canners get gauges checked. I'll have to pass that one on. |
