The Stalker
The storm left the valley and the sun began to melt the snow slowly. There were only a few clouds at the sky and the wind was blowing harshly at times.
A young and terribly thin Arabian stallion walked through the Lavender Fields. Sighing with a sad expression, he walked along a path and was deep in thought. He looked miserable with such an agonized expression and tears in his eyes. Suddenly he stopped and looked at the sky: "Almost one year, huh?". A tear ran down his cheek and the wind blew through his mane as he stood there staring at the clear blue sky.
He didn't know that someone watched him from afar...

Liam breathed in deep the heady scent of the lavender field. He was quite a way from the Khoya residence at the valley end in the east by now, wanting to familiarise himself with any unclaimed territory to better inform their future relocation decisions; the field he currently found himself in was thoroughly unsuitable due to the lack of actual edible grass, but the smell was heavenly. A little rest stop by the lake would be wonderful. He meandered through the tufts of lavender to the water's edge and bent his head to drink, feeling the icy wind biting into him occasionally. It was bitterly cold still, but at least he no longer had to deal with marching through snowdrifts; his knee was significantly less stiff today than it had been on that odd day in the storm.

At the sound of other hooves treading through the fields, he swung his head up sharply, water droplets scattering from his muzzle, but immediately relaxed to see the Rashid, the little roan scout. He smiled, and was about to call a greeting over, but then saw the young stallion's despondent expression and stopped himself. Perhaps he wanted to be left alone. He watched, concerned, for a moment.

Rashid still didn't notice his watcher but how could he, being filled up with these weird emotions, he didn't notice anything around him. "Why did she do that?", he mumbled and looked at the sky while tears flowed down his cheeks again. "Am I really that miserable!?", he suddenly shouted while he lowered his head and squinted his eyes. His emotions overwhelmed him and he started to cry. For a moment he just stood there, crying, while the icy wind blew through his face. "I...I just wanted to-", his voice refused to come out. Rashid was used to such situations. Remembering his bitter-sweet past was normal and almost daily he would cry and try to find an answer to his one and only question.

He looked at the sky again and the last tears fell on the ground. Taking a deep breath and then exhaling everything slowly, calmed him down even if it was just slightly. Rashid sighed and turned around to continue his job, but then he saw the big Perlino stallion further away. Standing there and watching him. He flinched and absolutely embarrassed he thought: "I want a hole to crawl into..."

Liam watched in horror as Rashid's emotions took over and the little arab wept and called out to the sky - he felt more than a little helpless, finding that he actually knew so little about the scout's past before the Khoya that he had no idea what could be causing him such pain. Unless - hopefully not - something had happened recently? But surely he would have heard about something of that magnitude. He dithered for a moment, and then Rashid made his decision for him by turning around. He had seen Liam, quite plainly, and there was no pretending Liam hadn't seen him. He walked over to Rashid's side through the haze of lavender perfume and tilted his head kindly.

"Want to talk about it?"
