i recently started smoking again after quiting last december. im planning to quit again, but wonder what would be the best way to do it this time? i have a crap tolerance to dealing with stress. the 1st time i started smoking again, was when i was going through a divorce( bit on the side was threatening all sorts of me) so stressed,i got back on the cigs. then i had that shit with my job and living situation( see getting a job thread) anyway,it seems to me, that my stress dealing threshold is crap. so what,if any,are the best ways to quit smoking for good and to deal better with stress without turning to a crutch such as fags? |

There's nothing wrong with smoking. If I didn't have my fags, I'd have gone on a Sutcliffe by now. I'd be reconstructing the film "Man Bites Dog" on Wrexham High Street. Quit something else. |

I feel your pain Yardie. I've been smoking on and off since the age of about 15. I'm currently in one of my 'off' stages having given them up again in October, having started again in April. My biggest problem is simply that I love smoking, though rather bizarrely, I don't struggle to quit as long as I actually want to quit. When I try to quit simply because I feel like I should, then I ultimately fail after a few days. If I actually want to quit, then I usually manage a few months before I start missing them and end up buying a 10-pack, which leads to a 20-pack and so on. Right now I'm off them, but it'll be a Christmas Miracle if I get through the Christmas break without starting again. |

Yardie, you need to break the dependency of the everyday fag. I suggest taking up smoking spliff in the evenings, but cutting out the normal 20 a day. It's then a lot easier to cut back on your ganja routine and slowly ease out of smoking. |

It seems that some people can just stop and others can't. Obvious statement but my Grandma just stopped one day and that was it, it didn't bother her again, but both my mum and one of my mates have been off and on for years now. |

I have never smoked in my life, although I inhale the rest of my family's smoke so I don't really need to find the money for it. EDIT: Wait, I lie. I smoke a cigar now and then if I've been playing poker round my mates house. I like the smell. Doesn't happen much these days though. Edited by Mr.Showtime, 1st December 2009 - 04:38 PM.

If I was to give up the fags I'd go the Uncle Buck route and just start on smoking cigars, then eventually a pipe. I do enjoy the odd Cohiba or Romeo y Julieta, but I can't afford 15 quid cigars every day, unfortunately. |

I gave up in February because I thought I might have pneumonia, turns out I didn't but I hadn't had a fag in three days, so I decided to stick at it. It was pretty difficult for a few weeks, especially when out on the piss. I still go out with the smokers when they head out for a puff. Occasionally I'll dream that I've had fag and wake up annoyed with myself. |

Have you tried chewin gum when you feel the need to smoke? I've heard it works but dont know anyone who has had a go. I've went off them a few times for maybe a week or two, just to see if i can or if i've been short of cash, but i've never fully quit. I'd have fuck all else to do during the day. And, i enjoy smoking so i've really got no reason to quit. I do like the odd cigar aswell but you can only get the cheap ones round my way. |
